The duo behind Nova Chiu concentrated on creating a more wearable and versatile collection. With their past two collections pushing Avant Grade boundaries, the minimalist tone taken embodies a clean, flattering and functional collection with simple, yet beautiful structured shapes. Whilst on their journey’s Nova and Jeff took many images of the scenic landscapes including mountains, trees and rivers which they manipulated the colouring and printed on fabric such as; Silk, Satin, Cotton and Spandex. The collection uses a similar colour palette to Autumn/Winter 2012 with a plethora of colours including pink, blue, green, orange and purple. Nova Chiu manages to create timeless pieces with a unique appeal to make a strong statement this season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Company History The Nova Chiu brand is a new fashion label developed in London, United Kingdom. Nova, who graduated from London College of Fashion in July of 2011 won the prestigious award of Collection of the Year at her graduate press show in June of that same year. After some deliberation, she decided to join partnership with her boyfriend Jeff Archer, who is a designer she met while interning with Anna Sui. Their first project together was to show under Vauxhall Fashion Scouts Ones to Watch show at London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 this past month. After rave reviews about the new collection, Nova and Jeff knew that starting their own label was the right thing to do. Designers History Nova started her career in London back in 2006 at the Camberwell College of Art and Design, where she studied her foundation course for one year and she graduated with distinction. In 2007, Nova then enrolled at London College of Fashion studying BA Fashion Design Technology Surface Textiles. During her studies at London College of Fashion she went on to intern with Matthew Williamson and Richard Nicoll. After studying for two years, Nova took a year off due to financial constraints in 2009. During this time she flew to New York City to intern with Anna Sui. It was there where she met her boyfriend and business partner Jeff Archer. Jeff graduated from Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design in Vancouver, Canada. Before he met Nova in Anna Sui, he also interned with Betsey Johnson in New York City and the House of Spy in Toronto, Canada. In 2010, Nova finished her internship with Anna Sui and then went to work for K&G Fashion, which is a fashion production company in the garment district of New York City. After 5 months of working there, Nova then went back to London to finish her final year at London College of Fashion, Jeff soon followed. In 2011, with Jeffs help, Nova worked on her graduate collection titled Shangri-Ladida for which she was crowned Collection of the Year, and she also awarded First Class Honours for her degree. The Nova Chiu brand then took a step in the right direction by teaming up with Vauxhall Fashion Scout. VFS named Nova Chiu in their Ones to Watch Show during London Fashion Week in February of 2012. Achievements: -Selected to show and exhibited at Vauxhall Fashion Scouts Ones to Watch Show. BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

francescasmith@live.co.uk www.francescasmith.co.uk Francesca Smith's work explores the capabilities and juxtaposition of combining hard materials with soft textiles within a fashion jewellery context. She explores a variety of materials from woods to fabrics, to metals to plastics. Exploring the possibilities of applying alternative materials to a fashion jewellery context. Francesca Smith's BA graduate collection: "I have always been fascinated by modern social attitudes towards remembering the dead and how people deal with the loss of a loved one. By looking at the extravagant rituals and customs of the Victorian era and the funerary practices of its people, my intent was to produce a collection, which confronts people with the idea of positive remembrance. By exploring the designs of Victorian jewellery and cemetery art, I sort to recreate classic designs using modern technologies. This contrast reflects the concept of current attitudes towards death compared to that of the Victorians. Using 3D design software and the process of rapid prototyping, I created nylon components embodying elements of Victorian mourning design. I chose to combine these elements with human hair and fabric to create a material juxtaposition, which reflects my design style of using hard materials with soft textiles." Rococo style ankle boot

MA Fashion Footwear

Winner: The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers' Bursary 2009 The collection "Artisan" explores and challenges the boundaries between 17th and 18th century British Rococo furniture carving and wearable fashion footwear. The use of natural influences, traditional craftsmanship, British heritage, British design, bespoke shoe making and decretive laser cutting has always been a focal point for my work and has pushed me to embody all their characteristics within this collection .The areas explored are all areas of strong interest that characterises my work and enables me to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the artisan crafts which enabled me to produce a individual fashion forward footwear collection for the bespoke and luxury footwear market. The collection was achieved by developing my own techniques for surface decoration using computer aided design wood carving and laser cutting techniques which were achieved in practical studio based work. But also working very closely with various artisans such as master woodcarvers, gilders, heel makers, and a bespoke shoemakers allowed me to push and make the collection feasible www.jodyparchment.com luxuryshoes@jodyparchment.com photographer : Azza -azphotographer@hotmail.co.uk

wild things

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

My 2012 FW COLLECTION COCEPT IS MONSTERS This project started travel from a film which is ‘Where the wild things are’. And this travel found new beautiful. This project explores that these new beautiful through the ‘Monsters’. What we think about the monster? ‘Monsters’ is generally describes just fantasy in film and books. Moreover they considered that existence of weird and unnatural things. However they have history and emotions as well human being. In addition, they reflect our society. In other words, monsters are our alter ego. These monsters are actually weird in our society. However, I would say that, they are beautiful. TEXTILES WORKS IN THIS PROJECT The collection is Autumn/Winter 2012 and fabric consideration is very important to this project. Fabrics, like the preceding, describe contrast as well as colours palette. Main fabrics are nature feeling materials such as felt, wool, hair and cotton even bio-fibers. In contrast, point materials are unnatural fabrics. These point materials focus on sustainability using recycle materials which we once used and have since abandoned The combination of these nature winter fabrics and pointed recycle materials are trying making beautiful fabrics. They are mixed diverse methods such as knitting, felting, printing and embroidery. For example, plastic bag can be thread. If we cut it fine, and then stretching it, we can get fiber. After then, the fiber can be used knitting, crochet and embroidery. In addition, PET bottle can be changed to beads. If we chop PET bottle, we can get shine fine materials. And then makes hole we can using it fashion materials. Finally, this project can shows beautiful new fabrics when these kind of materials and nature fabrics knitting and hand embroidery together. Like this, most of my works have focused on sustainability. I'm really interested in that abandoned materials reborn as beautiful fashion materials. This makes unique and special quality and meaning of my garments. This is my works philosophy and differentiation. Carven SS12

MA History And Culture Of Fashion

PAST AS PRESENT: THE REVIVAL OF LUXURY HERITAGE BRANDS IN THE HYPER/LIQUID WORLD Between 2006 and 2010, a series of luxury heritage brands were simultaneously revived by autonomous entities after years of idle dormancy. The trend, characterized primarily by Cacharel, Carven, Halston, The House of Worth, Irfé and Vionnet, could initially be dismissed as a mere coincidence. Upon closer inspection, however, the phenomenon is a peculiar and unprecedented development in fashion. Taking into consideration the type of brands being revived, including their history, reputation and following, plus the overall timing of their parallel resuscitation suggests something far more complicated than a slight twist of fate. To dismantle and expose the significance of this phenomenon, Past As Future: The Revival of Luxury Heritage Brands in the Hyper/Liquid World, looks beyond the boundaries of fashion to demonstrate how growing societal anxieties have influenced the industry’s overall direction. Grounded within hypermodernism and liquid modernity, Past as Future proposes the revival of luxury heritage brands is the result of society’s eroding confidence in forward-orientated progress. Plagued by perpetual anxiety, uncertainty, temporality and ‘nowism,’ the hyper/liquid world has become pervasive, casting the fashion industry and its participants into a constant state of flux where present-day gratifications are unremitting. As a result, the hyper/liquid state of fashion has forced the industry to collapse upon itself, rendering it incapable of projecting itself forward. With the future acting as a source of anxiety rather than a site of refuge, fashion has returned to its past to create its future. ABOUT MELISSA WUSATY Melissa is a strategic communications and branding professional working exclusively within the fashion sector. Using her extensive academic background studying hypermodern consumption, Melissa’s core professional expertise rests in devising digital brand experience. Interested in how modern consumers build emotional connections with brands, she pursues what is on the forefront of communication and technology. After completing her Masters dissertation on the revival of luxury heritage brands at the London College of Fashion, Melissa turned her sights to the various unexplored tactics available to dormant brands seeking contemporary relevance - taking a special interest in Halston. Not one for idle moments, Melissa also occupies the helm of Conglomerate Magazine. Consolidating her interests and professional background, Melissa founded the niche market publication to bridge the gap primarily between emerging designers and international buyers. Armed with her entrepreneurial instinct, she successfully brought the magazine into acclaim bestowing its first year with an Applied Arts Magazine award in 2010. Melissa currently splits her time between London and Calgary, Canada

Hypothalamus - Couture Sparterie Piece

BA (Hons) Cordwainers Accessories: Product Design & Development

www.lauraapsitlivens.co.uk As a hat designer I think is of the upmost importance that we do not see Couture Millinery disappear. It is important to me to use modern designs with old couture techniques, each piece being hand blocked and individually hand stitched and without the use of any machinery. Influenced by unusual uses of material and working through the concept of 'Skin' for my final collection produced for my degee, I wanted to combine everything I have learnt about leather with my millinery skills. I used raw inspiration from the human body and, using unconventional materials, I have created unusual and unique pieces. My objective was to design pieces which would also be seen as pieces of art. My pieces are always hand stiched, bespoke and of the highest quality; perfection is the only option. Materials used are unusual but aesthetically pleasing, making the mind question what it is looking at. In addition to completing my degree at the London College of Fashion I have attended specialist milinery courses to expand my knowledge of millinery and enhance my milinery skills. I have also been interning for Philip Treacy for the past two years, where I have gained invaluable experience and learnt all the Couture Techniques. I have made pieces for couture houses such as Valentino, Giorgio Armani and Alexander McQueen. I am currently working for my own company Laura Apsit Livens Limited, based in Chester in my own studio, I am often comuting to London, I have now produced 3 collections including SS13 - Bulls are colourblind - www.lauraapsitlivens.co.uk/bullsarecolourblind.html Currently is with PR agency POP PR - If you wish to contact for more details www.poppr.co.uk Contact: laura@lauraapsitlivens.co.uk

ANIMAL: The Other Side of Evolution (fiberglass, polyester resin, 2012)

MA Fashion Artefact

ANIMAL: The Other Side of Evolution (fiberglass, polyester resin, 2012) WINNER OF THE MA DESIGN AWARD 2012, LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION, UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON WINNER OF THE ACCESSORIES COLLECTION OF THE YEAR, INTERNATIONAL TALENT SUPPORT (ITS) 2012, ITALY The project is grounded in a unique visual interpretation of animal anatomy, building upon existing skeleton structures to create a series of sculptural pieces that appear as natural properties of the human body, suggesting strength, power and sensuality. Concepts of mutation and evolution are explored in order to develop a contemporary cross-image of human and animal, an atemporal, supreme creature, beyond past and future. The goal was to fabricate a collection of 8 pieces of personal adornment, that would not be specifically categorised as jewellery or accessories. The idea was to step out of the traditional jewellery/accessories context in order to develop a ‘new breed’ of precious objects that can be exhibited both separately on their own and fully attached to the human body. All of the objects were handcrafted creating multi-part master molds, using gelcoat, fiberglass, resin and silicone rubber. The pieces perform a double function: they exist as fashion objects attached to the wearer, as well as separate art works, exhibited in gallery spaces. Because of this dual quality they can be considered fashion artefacts in the true sense: objects of desire, rather than just mere adornments. photographs by Fernando Lessa model : Anna Tatton hair and make up : Sarah Frasca www.anarajcevic.com anarajcevic@gmail.com

Anjie Jimin An 2013 FW Collection

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear)

my collection started from japanese teenager biker gang in 80's which is called as Bousouzoku. As they were still high school students, they transformed their school uniform in their trendy way. So it got mixed with a few touch of school girl. "Favoured by renowned fashion journalist Hilary Alexander was BA (hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear student Anjie JiMin An’s collection. A mixture of dark plaid and navy, she described Anjie’s work as “quite Yohji… very commercial but also very avant-garde and the tailoring was exceptional.” The extremely long fake hair extensions that models wore, which came to almost kilt length, certainly had everyone talking." Factice Magazine, Designer Cat Patterson. Stylist Ihunna Eberendu

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

Glitter with Substance The intention of the collection intends to expose exploitation through the imposition of westernisation by rebelling against it, through designing a revolutionary combatant style. In wanting to learn more about my partner and his family’s background, being from the Democratic Republic of Congo, I read such books as Adam Hochschild’s ‘King Leopold’s Ghosts’ and Chancellor William’s ‘The Destruction of Black Civilisation. With the history, corruption and traditions of the Congo, I was deeply inspired and very passionate to learn more on a personal level and to develop this through a design process. The clothing will make evident the conflict between the Western and African culture by deconstructing and then fusing the elements together in a contrasting way. Looking at the Black Panther’s in particular on how their uniform portrayed their revolutionary message and why is it important to focal point the corruption of westernisation? By juxtaposing the Western culture with the African culture, combining the traditions of the Congo, the zig-zag design, by bonding fabrics together and rastering the zig-zag pattern through on the laser cutting machine onto staple western pieces and silhouettes; the clothing is then heavily embellished with gold paperclips, ring pulls and safety pins, giving it a hand crafted, individual look. The pieces make a statement, with an exaggerated style and excessive colour palette. About me: Being in touch with historical, cultural and modern day issues with the world, my sources of inspiration are enriched with juxtoposing elements creating a strong statement with bold pieces. Exploring different ways to manipulate fabrics, creating something new and interesting out of mundane every day things; with ring pulls and paper clips being highly used in the current collection. Always keen to rebel in an unexpected way... MA Fashion Design Technology, Womenswear

Rahull Verma has recently completed a Master of Art with distinction in Fashion Design and Technology, specialising in Womenswear from London College of Fashion. Rahull graduated from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi in 2008 with a gold medal in academic excellence. He then worked in the industry for two years to gain experience and build his portfolio to earn a spot in the class of MA in 2010. Rahull’s strengths lie in pattern cutting and tailoring, along with an excellent understanding of fabrics and finishing which he mixes with his keen eye for aesthetics and attention to detail. Experimental in approach, the inspiration for his MA collection - ‘_hybrid basic’ comes from the architectural influence on fashion; with reference to the concepts of ‘Deconstruction’ and ‘Difference’ coined by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. The two concepts are interpreted through pattern cutting methodology and fabrication respectively. The majority of the collection has been produced in-house by the designer himself. ‘_hybrid basic’ was nominated for the collection of the year award for 2012 and shown in a catwalk show at Victoria and Albert museum on Feb 2, 2012.

I chose to combine these elements with human hair and fabric to create a material juxtaposition, which reflects my design style of using hard materials with soft textiles."
