Objects of enduring value

MA Fashion Artefact

Investigating the principles of emotionally durable design, I intended to develop a personal design approach aiming to encourage emotional value of things and to extend the lifespan of objects of use. Using methods of production that are a combination of traditional and industrial manufacturing and then taking the best of each to create products that stand for meaningful and sincere design. Working between the areas of the hand-made and mass-production and differing the meaning of value from luxury in the context of design objects. Placed between the field of rapidly changing fashion and technologically driven and mass-producing industrial design, my work is set to challenge both of these industries by emphasising the emotional value of things.

Maternal Identity

MA Fashion Artefact

My MA body of work ' Authorised Identity' explores my family's migrant story, and its manifestation on body through extension of form and shadows created by large wood and metal structures. Each artefact has its own unique identity representing emotions and codes the piece portrays. My work explores being British Asian and the amalgamation of culture. ‘VASANT UTSAV. Celebration of spring’ a/w 2013 "A celebration is a public performance that marks an important event in the life of a person or a group", (Smithsonian Institution, 1982:p.61). It is an event where something peculiar or particular can be remembered and practiced every year. According to Turner (1981), during celebrations people think and feel more deeply than in everyday life. They express the meanings and values of their societies in special, often vivid ways. Among these is the creation of beautiful or striking objects, which exist only because humankind celebrates its own existence. My collection is a representation of these rituals and habits, in particular the fashions and colours worn and how these affect the clothes and garments worn from day to day. I come from and Indian family where much importance was given to festivals and their celebrations. The one season as well as festival which fascinated me was spring with all textured and coloured outfits worn during the celebrations. To further comprehend the scope of the concept and to continue the visualization into textures, designs, silhouettes and shapes I took this fascination and decided that I would expand it to cover the celebration of spring and see what different outfits were worn by different countries during their spring festivals that included: Spring Break, Holi, Easter, Gangaur, Gangasar mela, Pongal, Pujillay, Nowruz and Pagan. ‘VASANT UTSAV- SPRING CELEBRATION’ WHIICH IS INSPIRED AND DEVELOPED THROUGH INTENSIVE RESEARCH OF STREET WEAR, FOLK WEAR AND PRODUCTS, CUSTOMS CARRIED ON DURING THIS CELEBRATION. IMPORTANCE IS PLACED ON HIGH QUALITY FABRICS. METHODS SUCH AS FELTING AND SPECIALISED MACHINE KNITTING, GLASS BEADING HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN GARMENT MAKING. 'ADITI GANESH SANE' IS A READY TO WEAR WOMENSWEAR CLOTHING BRAND,THE AESTHETIC AND FEEL OF THE BRAND HAS A BALANCE BETWEEN ORGANIC AND MODERN ELEMENTS, INFLUENCES FOR SIHOUTTES ARE DRAWN FROM JUXTAPOSING ETHNIC AND WESTERN CLOTHING. Jil Sander A/W 2012 Range Plan

BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Accessories: Product Design and Development

‘The Growing’ is the key concept of my collection. The inspiration comes from an artwork which uses thousands of nails to form a traditional Chinese water colour ink paint image created by artist Chen, Chun-Hao. The idea repeating a single small image to form a big picture is very fascinating. The collection starts from the idea of cells, which means the most basic element in design. It could be simply a shape, a colour or a line. Repeating the same elements many times creates organic and irregular shapes, almost like a process of cell growing. The research started with images and the scientific rules governing nature’s cells. It then extended to studying art works, products and architectures inspired by the same ideas. By putting together enormous small and simple elements, the collection tries to create an aesthetic feeling that recalls facing an ocean or the night sky, the feeling of been outnumbered and totally embraced by the beauty of nature. Also the collection tries to present a feeling of living things still growing rather than a static object. That is what the collection tries to achieve, to create a beauty similar to nature but using artificial materials. Looking at recent design history, the project idea is to move in an organic direction. Designers have always been inspired by natural, living beings, animals and plants. “Biology inspires structures that imitate living matter, from bone-like fibrous webs to abstracted cellular architecture” (WGSN, 2013). For instance, the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, by uses liquid-like silhouettes and organic, irregular shapes so that his buildings look like animal bones, flower buds or creatures from a dream. “He discovered a natural link with the archaic and classically pure forms that possessed an intense dramatic expression (Avery, 2003:99). It also inspires a variety of architecture across the world. Designers have begun use different methods to create buildings and products that are different from traditional methods and shapes. This is a process of evolution. SC Chang is aiming the functional and distinctive, and is providing an approachable designer experience with confident, youthful chic and stylish looks for men and women with individual style. In order to satisfy the global customer, the brand designs are a combination of eastern culture with contemporary style. The brand SC Chang aims to be a cutting edge and fashion forward with its refined leather goods for the accessory market. SC Chang aims combine different ideas, materials and techniques.

MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear

___________________________ MA FDT Menswear (2014) - Insecurity : chromatic theories in cut and silhouette. - This project is aimed to explore the under-spoken side of fashion by discovering within myself what evokes my silence and insecurity. By this means, colours, silhouettes while being able to balance a rational difference between both colour and form. It is as well aimed to apply an original approach in pattern cutting methodology combining with the eye for colour of myself in order to set the points for my expedition and eventually strengthen my ability to free myself from bonds of addiction and despair as well as my sense of connection with the wholeness of life and well-being. The concept is based on the experience when I was in adolescence; not being able to fit into the surrounding and not willing to show the difference is a sign of insecurity. As our deepest an innermost thoughts that we dare not share with others can often be released through the medium of art, just like writing a letter to ourselves that is for our eyes only releases our pent-up emotions.(J. McLEOD, pg.115) To understand and overcome the fear of confrontation and expression, it started with a self written poem in experience that recall moments of sentiment. To incorporate the concept into designing a collection, senses like hearing and seeing versus positive and negative space that relate to pattern cutting methodologies will be a major part of the development of form and silhouette. _________________ BA (Hons) FDT Menswear (2012) - MUTED ADOLESCENCE - HERA\WAN 2012 Autumn Winter menswear collection 'Muted Adolescence' is inspired by the innocence and subtle suppression of childhood in the early 1900s. The collection featured attentively screen printed spots, muted colour digital printed argyle pattern and unconventional application of straps and ribbons. The collection is tied together and elevated by the colour combinations and childlike proportion. __________ About the designer... No more army

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear

Unisex, Uniforms and Layers. suan-kim@hotmail.com'No More Army' The title 'No More Army' represents a collection that has an opposition specially to the military service. The outline was settled by travel Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Great War was happened. As many places within Sarajevo destroyed by bullets and bomb, the city aroused the negative side of military and evoked depressing First World War period, which supports how this concept was made. Combining army uniform with women's corset stands for the restraint as a corset has its history forcing women to have the same thin waist look, considered as the similarity to the treatment of soldiers, neglected identity and changed wearers look as a bunch of warrior.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

Oksana Anilionyte I would like to thank Saga Furs for a wonderful sponsorship. Collection is based on idea of a soft control. The collection is an investigation into inter-relation of minimalism and modern women. I found my inspiration in Michelangelo Antonioni films L’Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), Eclipse (1962) and Il deserto rosso (1964). His films concentrate on how the modern world influence people and their feelings. Personal feelings, doubts, moods are substance of the films. The works and processes of Robert Morris, Tony Cragg and Daniel Arsham sculptures and abstract painting of Dale Frank served as the initial inspiration for the silhouette, colour, texture and details of the collection. The aim was to mix different techniques and inspirations to reach new and unexpected levels. I embraced the complexities and simplicities by different techniques to reinvent a version of femininity. Robert Morris felt sculptures led to create new ways of using seams to express the fluidity of line. The collection is a lot about the lines that are so pure, so clear, that they convey simplicity in their perfection. The purity is combined with texture that comes from tufting embroidery and soft fur to create a new level of feelings that garments create when touched. A dialogue between time and timelessness runs through the progression of the minimalist aesthetic which is felt in fluidity of seam lines. The collection incorporates a range of luxury fabrics (cashmere, wool, silk, fur, leather) to examine the balance between textures, silhouette and a purity of line.
