COLLECTION MOTIVATION
Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France
If youâve ever visited Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France, then youâll know itâs a wonderful place to spend some reflective time and just get away from it all. For a long while I wanted to create a collection inspired by Pere Lachaise, so when I got accepted onto the Masters course at Cordwainers, it seemed the perfect opportunity.
Initially, I wanted to design and dedicate each pair of footwear to a famous residence at the cemetery for example, Frederic Chopin, Eugene Delacroix, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde etc. However, after several visits I started to realise that I was more attracted to the abandoned and decaying graves and mausoleums. Whilst, most of the tourist would flock to all the famous graves, I started to think more and more about the abandoned sites. Somehow I wanted to pay homage to the forgotten people at Pere Lachaise. The people whose graves no longer get visited by friends, family or loved ones because their lineage had now ceased at some point. It made me think about the value we find in things. That no matter how precious or valuable we may find something, nature will eventual find a way to erase all traces of it. This corrosive effect nature has on the graveâs materials such as the wood, lime stone or metal, most visitors to Pere Lachaise may find repellent, but I wanted to celebrate all the beauty I see in it.
Each design is named and dedicated to the grave site which influenced it.
ONLY A LIMITED SELECTION OF THE FULL COLLECTION IS SHOWN HERE.
The collection was entirely handmade by Michael Azu using traditional footwear construction techniques.
COLLECTION MATERIALS
Lambskin/Copper/Brass
The metals used on the heels and uppers were Brass or Copper which were then treated with an accelerated aging process.

âEternity Waitâ explores the phenomenon which people spend
the time waiting for something and their perception of time, where
the aim is the action of waiting, not the object people are waiting
for. The starting point of my final major project is the famous
absurd play created by Samuel Beckett -- Waiting for Godot. The
main concept of the project is about â Waiting â, which I first got
inspired from my personal experience and affections in a certain
of waiting activities during my holiday. In this design report I will
elaborate the interpretation of Waiting for Godot and how I linked
the idea of time perception to the action of waiting. Furthermore,
the approaches and methods of transferring the idea of waiting into
my final project and textile designs.

This project seeks to design a collection that pays homage to diamond miners. It takes inspiration from both historical and contemporary examples of dress worn by this worker.
This work refers to the worker and is analyzed in three ways, which relate to the terms âDifficultyâ, âDirtâ and âDangerâ.
It is all about strong woman, grunge style and street looks, as models appeared in slouchy, denim fabric garments, including deconstructive jackets, functional jumpsuits and shift dress. These works pursue comfortable, protective, and functional elements.

BA (Hons) Costume for Performance
I believe my passion for original and innovative costumes has pushed me to challenge the boundaries of what is traditionally perceived as costume through my interaction with objects and landscape. My excitement for character and concept has led me to produce a range of works which draw influences from existing narratives and philosophical concepts. I remain enthusiastic about all areas of costume whether contemporary or historic and have a high appreciation for tailoring which I picked up from my time spent interning on Savile Row.
My final major project drew its inspirations from the works of John Cage and Marcel Duchamp and was directed by a series of chance determined operations. It also considers the theory of the observer completing the work through its use of reflective surfaces. I worked with themes that were loosely selected from Samuel Beckets Waiting for Godot, most notably those of isolation, repetition, unknown and on-going. With this work I sought to explore the limitations of costume and its potential to additionally exist as props and set. The costumes ability to merge into its landscape pushed me to consider the scale of the work and its potential to keep growing and expanding.

Maria is a London based fashion jewellery designer, who graduated The London College of Fashion (2013) with a BA in Fashion Jewellery. Originally Maria took a foundation course at Central St Martin's in Art and Design, where she intended to embark on a career in Women's wear. However after some mentoring and self realization, Maria discovered that her true passion and talents were in jewellery design.
During her time spent at LCF Maria developed her own style of design based on organic life and shapes taken from nature, combined with a mystical element of life forms from outer space. This unique combination led to a creative final project which she is very proud to present. Through experimentation Maria learned to use digital technology such as rapid prototyping, which enabled her to create the pieces that she had envisaged.
Maria's graduate collection was inspired by nature and a curiosity of what lies beneath in the ocean together with the same curiosity for what exists beyond planet Earth. The final pieces are based on a mythical sea creature which was made with black lacquered plastic and Swarovski crystals.

Born in Israel, Liron Kliger is a London based jewellery designer who graduated a BA (HON) in Jewellery Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion. Liron developed a passion for jewellery design whilst completing a foundation in fashion design course at West London College, Liron developed a love for raw materials and desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used.
The primary influence on Lironâs work (apart from the raw materials) evolved from years spent living and travelling in cosmopolitan cities including Barcelona, Paris, Milan and Tel Aviv. Liron was exposed cultural idiosyncrasies which in turn influenced the way in which she combines / uses materials and their subsequent adaptation to her needs.
Lironâs latest project developed from a fascination with snakeskin and infatuation with catwalk pieces; motivating her to create her own interpretation via snakeskin inspired bangles. Lironâs previous catwalk projects include a large feathered neck piece and oversized dice jewellery.
In the foundation year of her BA Liron was awarded third place in the UK in a competition run by the Metro newspaper for her creation of a jewellery body suit utilising recycled materials.

MA Fashion Footwear
This project endeavours to challenge modes of production and perceptions of luxury, by subverting waste leather scraps in the making of a collection of footwear and fashion accessories. I wanted to create a relationship between the waste material and the resulting products that would legitimise processes of recycling within the luxury industry.
Through research and practical experimentation with binding substances and casting techniques, Iâve developed an original leather composite material with variations in hardness and flexibility to suit a range of applications.
The geological appearance of the leather composite is reinforced throughout the collection by strong monolithic forms, conjuring the idea of a naturally occurring sedimentary material layered from human debris.
Through these products, the discarded waste assumes new value and meaning, not only offering a solution to the problem of waste, but importantly, it draws awareness to mass consumption and encourages the consumer to engage with processes of manufacturing.

The project D a r s a n explores the role of marking tools in tracing reminiscences and examines the inborn manner of recollection. It seeks to experiment with natural charcoal drawing/marking processes, following and exploring the historical cave drawing methods.
The results are a series of flowing, dream-like marking tools for recollections, which were used to make traces, marks and imprints on garments and transport the viewer and wearer into the imaginary of filmed reality.
My project was done in collaboration with the sculptor Jaime Miranda. ⨠We took an approach that utilized a system of conceptualization and design, and instead of developing tools, we discovered them. â¨We spent days on the shores of South Americaâs Pacific Ocean searching for driftwood that in its natural state would be the ideal foundation and base for our objects.
Blurring the line between art and fashion, tools and garments brought to the existence the original interpretation of the ritual for the human- made drawing tools. â¨The marking tools are designed to give a dose of emotion, to fill the fashion object and give a new perspective for looking at them.
I believe that the project proposes and provides a tangible experience of the newly proclaimed technological present whose intention was â¨to stimulate debate and reflections on the fragility of the relationship between human and nature.
