BA (Hons) Cordwainers Footwear: Product Design & Development

B R A N D C O N C E P T Mobility, Style & Comfort is the heart of Holiday footwear. The brand's ultimate goal is to establish a reputation for the perfect city holiday shoes - hence the name Holiday - for the women who are creative, independent and well travelled. P R E S S "When I saw Hiroe Haruki wearing her own shoes at the exhibition, I immediately thought of the possibilities should her shoes be taken to production stages. She hasn't just come up with a collection but a brand concept as well to create the perfect city holiday shoes. Travellers and nomads inspired Haruki to create shoes that unify techniques from various cultures. They are shoes that are meant to be well-travelled and well-worn. Using wet-molding, her soles are designed for practicality and comfort and the neon cord detailing gives the shoes the design oomph they need. Here's hoping Haruki and her shoes for Holiday take off." - Style Bubble (http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2012/07/shoes-n-things.html) A B O U T With a background in product design, Hiroe has keen eyes in details, finding significance in experimenting with materials and challenging conventional construction whilst considering practicality. Hiroe has gained invaluable work experience at Celine, Chau Har Lee and Roland Mouret. She is currently seeking employment in the footwear/fashion industry. THE SOUND OF HOMELESS(NESS)

MA Fashion Design Technology, Menswear

THE SOUND OF HOMELESS(NESS) AW 12/13 COLLECTION OF THE YEAR: MENSWEAR 2012 Introduction_ THE SOUND OF HOMELESS(NESS) is Tina Elisabeth Reiter’s final collection of the Master’s Degree Fashion Design & Technology: menswear course at London College of Fashion. After the Austrian born and raised fashion designer showed her post-graduate Diploma collection (Dipl.) in the international show at London Graduate Fashion Week 2010, Tina was invited to join the course and awarded the prestigious Harold Tillman scholarship. Participating with THE SOUND OF HOMELESS(NESS) at MA_12 exhibition & POEMTRY catwalk show at the V&A, she is nominated for the menswear collection of the year award, which she finally received. Inspired by the feeling of homelessness, its contemporary meaning of belonging-to and the seeking of your roots in our unpredictable globalised world. The collection has taken the heritage of the Austrian folk costume including its tradition and fused it with aesthetics of modern menswear. Extracting traditional techniques and silhouettes fitting it into a contemporary context is her unique way of staying true to your own roots. Nourished by the wish of an ideal world which is forever connected with the myth of the alps, the kitschy homeland movies of the Austrian postwar years and the world famous musical ‘The Sound of Music’. do-re-mi.. I have a strong passion for make up and prosthetics and I believe that I think outside the box. Creating designs that have never been seen before. I'm confident with the skills I have learned at The London College of Fashion and would like to push my abilities further and to learn more skills.

The duo behind Nova Chiu concentrated on creating a more wearable and versatile collection. With their past two collections pushing Avant Grade boundaries, the minimalist tone taken embodies a clean, flattering and functional collection with simple, yet beautiful structured shapes. Whilst on their journey’s Nova and Jeff took many images of the scenic landscapes including mountains, trees and rivers which they manipulated the colouring and printed on fabric such as; Silk, Satin, Cotton and Spandex. The collection uses a similar colour palette to Autumn/Winter 2012 with a plethora of colours including pink, blue, green, orange and purple. Nova Chiu manages to create timeless pieces with a unique appeal to make a strong statement this season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Company History The Nova Chiu brand is a new fashion label developed in London, United Kingdom. Nova, who graduated from London College of Fashion in July of 2011 won the prestigious award of Collection of the Year at her graduate press show in June of that same year. After some deliberation, she decided to join partnership with her boyfriend Jeff Archer, who is a designer she met while interning with Anna Sui. Their first project together was to show under Vauxhall Fashion Scouts Ones to Watch show at London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 this past month. After rave reviews about the new collection, Nova and Jeff knew that starting their own label was the right thing to do. Designers History Nova started her career in London back in 2006 at the Camberwell College of Art and Design, where she studied her foundation course for one year and she graduated with distinction. In 2007, Nova then enrolled at London College of Fashion studying BA Fashion Design Technology Surface Textiles. During her studies at London College of Fashion she went on to intern with Matthew Williamson and Richard Nicoll. After studying for two years, Nova took a year off due to financial constraints in 2009. During this time she flew to New York City to intern with Anna Sui. It was there where she met her boyfriend and business partner Jeff Archer. Jeff graduated from Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design in Vancouver, Canada. Before he met Nova in Anna Sui, he also interned with Betsey Johnson in New York City and the House of Spy in Toronto, Canada. In 2010, Nova finished her internship with Anna Sui and then went to work for K&G Fashion, which is a fashion production company in the garment district of New York City. After 5 months of working there, Nova then went back to London to finish her final year at London College of Fashion, Jeff soon followed. In 2011, with Jeffs help, Nova worked on her graduate collection titled Shangri-Ladida for which she was crowned Collection of the Year, and she also awarded First Class Honours for her degree. The Nova Chiu brand then took a step in the right direction by teaming up with Vauxhall Fashion Scout. VFS named Nova Chiu in their Ones to Watch Show during London Fashion Week in February of 2012. Achievements: -Selected to show and exhibited at Vauxhall Fashion Scouts Ones to Watch Show. London Fashion Week February 2012 - Winner of the overall prize at Fashion Culture: The Polish British Fashion Show in Warsaw, Poland. website : www.stineriis.com International Press Contact : Marlo Saalmink – Public Relations press@marlosaalmink.com www.marlosaalmink.com SHOWROOM DENMARK Gergersen Communication Denise Wilke Juhl denise.juhl@gregersen.cc Stine Riis’s F/W 2011 ready-to-wear collection ‘Decadence & Decay’, is an investigation into the inter-relation between form and decay. Her collection incorporates a range of luxurious fabrics (wool, silk, patent leather, fur) to examine time’s invisible hand in transfiguring sculptures. In a media saturated society, mindlessly chasing “newness” regardless of merit, Stine Riis’s creations champion a fine-hewed beauty whose allure intensifies with the passing of time. These are not clothes that exist in a moment of time but rather stretch to illuminate the passing of lifetimes. The works and processes of Robert Morris and Donald Judd have served as the initial inspiration for her processes. By immersing herself in these artists seminal works, she has been enlightened to the complexities inherent in the simplest of things. Through a deliberate compulsion, she has attempted to transcend perfunctory looking to instead see the actual thing itself, rather than the illusions presented by things. These revelations are made manifest in a collection that is entirely harmonized within the garments themselves and in the collection as an entirety in regards to colors, shapes, and mood. A graduate of London College of Fashion, Riis intends to push beyond the temporal nature of fashion to offer her customer wearable pieces which transcend trends.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

Designer Hera Wan completed her BA in Fashion Design and Technology Menswear at London College of Fashion in 2012 and is pursuing her MA in menswear degree in London. During her BA study, she worked at the Amsterdam based fashion house of 'Viktor & Rolf' as a menswear design assistant for three months. With a curiosity driven mind and a lifelong passion for fashion, she decided to explore the realms of aesthetics through fashion design. Hera believes that ongoing dedication and inquisitive imagination are the fundamentals of design. Eruption of colours, noise, emotions and when cultures of different kinds clash and connect is what inspires Hera to create and design. Specialized in menswear gives Hera a great opportunity to test the boundary between traditional masculinity and her eccentric perception and aesthetics of masculinity. Capturing the harmony of colour, prints, and fine details, HERA\WAN showcases the elements of distinction and unexpected blitheness throughout its designs. HERA\WAN 2012 Autumn Winter menswear collection 'Muted Adolescence' is inspired by the innocence and subtle suppression of childhood in the early 1900s. The collection featured attentively screen printed spots, muted colour digital printed argyle pattern and unconventional application of straps and ribbons. The collection is tied together and elevated by the colour combinations and childlike proportion. This collection’s idea came from “Amelie from montmatre”, a French movie, which is telling the story of a girl – Amelie’s Life. It was directed by director Jean - Pierre Jeunet on 1997. This movie is very fresh on its color and concept, also it is very subconscious and naïve. It is one of my favorite movies, because it created a warm and beautiful world. There is a scene in the film, which Amelie has found a little box in the bathroom. It is a small collection of a boy who used to live in her apartment. It reminds everyone back to their own childhood. For my own childhood, I used to collect small object together into box or bottles, even a small pin. Most of time, the purpose of people who collecting things is because they want to save or build something, it may be their emotions or memories of their life. The procedure of making cloth, is quite familiar with the way of collecing things. De signers adding different elements and details into their collecting to make the basic block has more variery and possibility. Both of them is putting things together to build something. This also inspired me to develop the concept as collecting memories. This collection is more about collecting and saving things or memories when we were in children’s time. It is more about being playful and naïve. Furthermore, this is the time for playing and insouciance and also this is the time we want to keep in our memories all the time. This collection is aims of sixteen-plus girl who has phsycalliy beeing a women, but mantal being whinsical and creative. It will rebuild this naïve atmosphere to those “wendy girls” and remind their memories of childhood in 2011 Autumn/Winter. It is trying to find a new balance point of cute and sexy, formal and informal, minimalist and infinity, feminine and feminist. Yi Tian Sun E-mail: y_sun1@hotmail.com Tell: +44 (0) 7515 440 164

MA Fashion Design Technology, Womenswear

Rahull Verma has recently completed a Master of Art with distinction in Fashion Design and Technology, specialising in Womenswear from London College of Fashion. Rahull graduated from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi in 2008 with a gold medal in academic excellence. He then worked in the industry for two years to gain experience and build his portfolio to earn a spot in the class of MA in 2010. Rahull’s strengths lie in pattern cutting and tailoring, along with an excellent understanding of fabrics and finishing which he mixes with his keen eye for aesthetics and attention to detail. Experimental in approach, the inspiration for his MA collection - ‘_hybrid basic’ comes from the architectural influence on fashion; with reference to the concepts of ‘Deconstruction’ and ‘Difference’ coined by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. The two concepts are interpreted through pattern cutting methodology and fabrication respectively. The majority of the collection has been produced in-house by the designer himself. ‘_hybrid basic’ was nominated for the collection of the year award for 2012 and shown in a catwalk show at Victoria and Albert museum on Feb 2, 2012. Drawing is key to my design process, along with 3D experimentation, collage and redrawing from photographic manipulations. My aesthetic is free and fluid with sobering elements of geometry from traditional Middle Eastern textiles. My recent work is inspired by Edward Said's concept of "Orientalism" - the portrayal of stereotypical Middle Eastern identities in the western media and the representation of ethnic identities through an orientalism "lens". The prints for this collection portray a landscape of ethnic bodies, as lines they are displaced and dis-located. Facial and bodily shapes like Dali's figures, bleed out from their original contours to merge into each other and melt into the earth to create a distorted and exaggerated, foreign landscape - this has become the "middle eastern" ethnoscape, perceived historically and contemporaneously in art and literature. The aestheticisation of the concept has come from my process of research and exploration of the theme of distorted ethnic identities. The faces of ethnically diverse women in London have been photographed through concave ad convex lenses to create exaggerated proportions and distortions of their physical identities. These photos have been further distorted using web cams and digital software. I have drawn from these images in a style that is free and fluid, black and white to begin with and then re-coloured, again offering another distorted perspective of reality. The silhouettes for my collection consider what a world post-orientalism would be like. Oversized in proportion and layered with printed fabric the wearer is covered in story upon story, reinterpreted, and re-portrayed from various angles of the orientalism lens. The body’s own curves and proportions are obscured; individual history is replaced by a story of colonial history and images of ideological colonisation. Post apocalyptic feelings of isolation and anxiety or fear of the ethnic other come into play with the mood. As people who perceive the ethnic other through an orientalism lens that convolutes identity with stereotyped visions that have been democratised through orientalist art and mass media, we isolate ourselves through de-familiarity with the rest of the world and its diverse beauty. francescasmith@live.co.uk www.francescasmith.co.uk Francesca Smith's work explores the capabilities and juxtaposition of combining hard materials with soft textiles within a fashion jewellery context. She explores a variety of materials from woods to fabrics, to metals to plastics. Exploring the possibilities of applying alternative materials to a fashion jewellery context. Francesca Smith's BA graduate collection: "I have always been fascinated by modern social attitudes towards remembering the dead and how people deal with the loss of a loved one. By looking at the extravagant rituals and customs of the Victorian era and the funerary practices of its people, my intent was to produce a collection, which confronts people with the idea of positive remembrance. By exploring the designs of Victorian jewellery and cemetery art, I sort to recreate classic designs using modern technologies. This contrast reflects the concept of current attitudes towards death compared to that of the Victorians. Using 3D design software and the process of rapid prototyping, I created nylon components embodying elements of Victorian mourning design. I chose to combine these elements with human hair and fabric to create a material juxtaposition, which reflects my design style of using hard materials with soft textiles."
