MA Fashion Artefact

My work looks to explore contemporary interpretations of traditional women's beauty items and vanity cases, playing on identifiable codes and exploring less conventional forms, to create a range of unique receptacles. A mix of traditional hand crafted skills and lustrous materials, create an opulent aesthetic for these conventional and functional artefacts. Highly engineered components were designed to be integral to the functionality of the products. The notion that individual components within each artefact's design can hold another use when deconstructed, counteracts the well-known phrase of beauty only being skin deep. The products that have been designed look to offer better engagement with the user and their experience with the artefacts, as well as offering a greater value and appreciation for the products.

MA Fashion Artefact

Maria is currently studying her MA course in Fashion Artefact !!! Maria is a London based fashion jewellery designer, who graduated The London College of Fashion (2013) with a BA in Fashion Jewellery. Originally Maria took a foundation course at Central St Martin's in Art and Design, where she intended to embark on a career in Women's wear. However after some mentoring and self realization, Maria discovered that her true passion and talents were in jewellery design. During her time spent at LCF Maria developed her own style of design based on organic life and shapes taken from nature, combined with a mystical element of life forms from outer space. This unique combination led to a creative final project which she is very proud to present. Through experimentation Maria learned to use digital technology such as rapid prototyping, which enabled her to create the pieces that she had envisaged. Maria's graduate collection was inspired by nature and a curiosity of what lies beneath in the ocean together with the same curiosity for what exists beyond planet Earth. The final pieces are based on a mythical sea creature which was made with black lacquered plastic and Swarovski crystals. email: mariasokolyanskaya@gmail.com 1. http://digits2widgets.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/d2w-in-camden-town-launch-night/ 2. http://blog.trendstop.com/2013/05/gfw-ones-to-watch-maria-sokolyanskaya/ 3. http://institutemag.com/2013/07/05/magic-touch/ 4. http://www.ladiesngents.com/en/fast-forward2/MARIA-SOKOLYANSKAYA.asp?thisPage=1 5. for PROJECT 104 and KapriTV http://vimeo.com/72962988

Kinetic traces- Rubber balls hydraulic heels

MA Fashion Footwear

Kinetic Traces How can body motion dictate women’s fashion footwear design and its performance draw our consciousness? The principal functions of footwear are often sacrificed in Fashion. This project brings sports footwear fundamentals to high-end fashion as sports footwear are based on function and wearability, both very important elements for design features that must interact with the body and be usable by the wearer. I have been analysing comfort elements in footwear, and specially I studied and developed impact absorption, shoe weight, traction (the relationship between shoe and surface) and upper durability. I sought to bring these concepts into the design of high-end women’s high heels. The central concept of the project development was impact absorption, which was studied from a mechanical point of view because heels are structures which are affected by many different forces during the process of human motion. Working with an architect helped to study the forces which interact in the structure of the shoe during movement when walking with high heels. A collaboration with a photographer to photograph and then analyse the forces that interacting with the key points of the human movement that made possible to see the continuous movement broken down into individual parts as a diagram. To realise the absorption function, I introduced an element of internal movement into these structures. I collaborated with an engineer partner to develop these mechanisms, a mechanical technician to develop the mock-ups, and finally with an industrial partner to enable production of the final product in an industrial and much more professional way to achieve an appropriate standard for the target market. The mechanism developments were realised considering factors from both machinery and footwear, to develop a balance between them; the factors that have been key to development are: body weight, body motion, friction, and the percentage of mobility to keep the stability and control of the movement. Impact absorption was developed using different mechanical methods that were not previously used in Fashion, adding features such as springs, rubber balls and, pneumatic hydraulics and metal rings. The last is a new system developed for the industrial partner that I worked with, allowing regulation of the absorption effect depending on body weight. The mechanism can be bespoke according to bodyweight. The final outcomes are a representation of introducing mechanical concepts to traditional footwear. The methodologies used in the project are from traditional making (leather workrked, traditional machinery making, metal work, wood shaping) and high technologies (3D milling machine and 3D printing). ISSUU - Entry into the Eastern European fashion retail market online by Hanna Gavrylova

MA Fashion Retail

I have several years of experience in Marketing and Social Marketing in the fashion industry. I have a a particular interest in market entry in the Eastern European region and innovative retail formats. In addition, I have a blog on the Vogue Ukraine website (vogue.ua). Below is a synopsis of my work. Title: An exploratory study of the internationalisation process for European online fashion retailers: the case of Ukraine and Russia This study explores the potential of altering the internationalisation strategy of European online fashion retailers to maximise their sales abroad. It draws on existing theories of market selection and focuses on the case of Ukraine and Russia because these two markets can be used to clearly illustrate the ‘springboard’ market concept. The outcome of this dissertation is a decision-making model with regard to the market selection process for European online fashion retailers. The research includes ten in-depth interviews with fashion retail professionals with expertise in the Ukrainian and Russian markets and internationalisation of European companies. The findings provide a practical contribution to the internationalisation strategy of online fashion retailers from Europe, especially the smaller companies with low level of brand awareness in foreign markets.

The Impact of Generation Y Females' Interaction with Social Media on the Selection Process of a Fashion Buyer

MA Fashion Retail

I am a proactive, dedicated fashion graduate with extensive international fashion work experience, eager to demonstrate profound knowledge of current trends, product know-how, retailing and buying. My focus and great interest in buying underline my exceptional motivation and enthusiasm for my MA Project's topic. Title: A Study of Buying for the Interactive Consumer - The Impact of Generation Y Females' Interaction with Social Media on the Selection Process of a Fashion Buyer Taking decisions about exactly what the product range should include has always been the crux of a buyer's job, and this job has been complicated by new influencing factors the buyer has to consider as a result of Generation Y females' interaction with social media. This exploratory study considers the literature in this new area, which because it is new, is scant. The purpose of the research is to further the knowledge and present proposals that should cover this gap in the fashion buyer's armoury to fully equip the buyer of the future. The research embraces an online survey with Generation Y females as well as in-depth interviews with retail buyers and social media specialists from three important UK fashion retailers. This dissertation demonstrates the necessity of social media usage as an innovative information gathering tool for the current selection process of a fashion buyer and sheds light on how best to engage with consumers. Furthermore it discusses future implications and gives recommendations for fashion buyers.

Gladstone Luggage Bag

MA Fashion Artefact

Reviving British Craftsmanship by utilising disappearing handcrafts whilst considering the functionality, for the modern male commuter. The aim of the collection was to explore British hand crafts which have been forgotten over time and explore these within our heritage. I wanted to revive such crafts and demonstrate the need for them within modern society, to promote the desire of such handcrafts. The collection demonstrates luxury, quality and longevity; traits which were important throughout the process to create a collection which has worth and demonstrates craftsmanship. The integrity of each artefact is highly valued; it has its own personality and identity. ‘Made by hand, the craft object bears the fingerprints, real or metaphorical, of the person who fashioned it.’ Octavio Paz. By taking traditional luggage as a beginning point, I redeveloped the design to suit the need for the modern traveller, the commuter. By observing the way people travel and carry their belongings, I was able to redesign the inside to create more practical luggage. Items such as iPad cases, laptop sleeves and pen holders are integrated into each design to create convenience. By incorporating striping into the designs I was able to extend the tailoring of the suit, to keep a corporate feel to the collection but also to add a contemporary feel.

BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

Born in Israel, Liron Kliger is a London based jewellery designer who graduated a BA (HON) in Jewellery Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion. Liron developed a passion for jewellery design whilst completing a foundation in fashion design course at West London College, Liron developed a love for raw materials and desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used. The primary influence on Liron’s work (apart from the raw materials) evolved from years spent living and travelling in cosmopolitan cities including Barcelona, Paris, Milan and Tel Aviv. Liron was exposed cultural idiosyncrasies which in turn influenced the way in which she combines / uses materials and their subsequent adaptation to her needs. Liron’s latest project developed from a fascination with snakeskin and infatuation with catwalk pieces; motivating her to create her own interpretation via snakeskin inspired bangles. Liron’s previous catwalk projects include a large feathered neck piece and oversized dice jewellery. In the foundation year of her BA Liron was awarded third place in the UK in a competition run by the Metro newspaper for her creation of a jewellery body suit utilising recycled materials. AW 2015 'Unknown Revolution' Collection

MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear

AW -2015‘Unknown revolution’ collection, inspiration from the military uniform and sportswear, in combination with different elements together is like a non-specific chemical reaction. They have passed through an interesting procedure of evolution. It’s a new attempt, evolution and challenge. The challenge will be to make the unknown collection. It will be a challenge of the graduate collection to make things which are original innovation, multi- transformation and flexibility function, extensibility, technological, visual effects and aesthetic perception. In keeping with the concept, white tone colours are used incorporated into the collection. There are eight outfits’ garments in this collection. Each piece of clothing in between each other are connected together. When the eight outfits connected with each clothes, they can be taken as a whole, also they can be disassembled into separate styles. The design begging with the simple line gradually extended to the complex diversity construct, it’s a gradual development evolution process.

Born out of an interest in collections and the personal stories behind them, I spent some time exploring objects and collections by talking to those people who work with, or simply delight in, objects old and new. Whether it's curation, business or aesthetics, I'm curious about how people engage with and use certain objects as a means of exploring creative processes from different points of view.
