MA History and Culture of Fashion

PAST AS PRESENT: THE REVIVAL OF LUXURY HERITAGE BRANDS IN THE HYPER/LIQUID WORLD Between 2006 and 2010, a series of luxury heritage brands were simultaneously revived by autonomous entities after years of idle dormancy. The trend, characterized primarily by Cacharel, Carven, Halston, The House of Worth, Irfé and Vionnet, could initially be dismissed as a mere coincidence. Upon closer inspection, however, the phenomenon is a peculiar and unprecedented development in fashion. Taking into consideration the type of brands being revived, including their history, reputation and following, plus the overall timing of their parallel resuscitation suggests something far more complicated than a slight twist of fate. To dismantle and expose the significance of this phenomenon, Past As Future: The Revival of Luxury Heritage Brands in the Hyper/Liquid World, looks beyond the boundaries of fashion to demonstrate how growing societal anxieties have influenced the industry’s overall direction. Grounded within hypermodernism and liquid modernity, Past as Future proposes the revival of luxury heritage brands is the result of society’s eroding confidence in forward-orientated progress. Plagued by perpetual anxiety, uncertainty, temporality and ‘nowism,’ the hyper/liquid world has become pervasive, casting the fashion industry and its participants into a constant state of flux where present-day gratifications are unremitting. As a result, the hyper/liquid state of fashion has forced the industry to collapse upon itself, rendering it incapable of projecting itself forward. With the future acting as a source of anxiety rather than a site of refuge, fashion has returned to its past to create its future. ABOUT MELISSA WUSATY Melissa is a digital content professional working in the technology and fashion sector. Combining her background in fashion publishing and education in digital brand management, Melissa's core expertise rests in creating online brand experience within the disciplines of content, e-commerce and user experience. Working between front/backend development and marketing teams, her aim is to build loyal brand interactions across all digital touch points. After completing her Masters dissertation on the revival of luxury heritage brands at the London College of Fashion, Melissa’s research has been sought out by a variety of brands, such as C.W. Dixey & Son, Irfé Paris and Paganne. Melissa currently lives in London.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

You are chatting amongst friends and a question pops up. If the answer to this question is unknown, the smart phone is whipped out and the answer is instantly revealed. My final collection started with this thought. Are we living in a society fuelled by instant gratification? Many believe the birth of the internet has acted as a catalyst in forming a heightened belief in the need and want for material items, through advertising and the easy ‘one click’ access the internet gives us anything (we think) our heart desires. An almost royal like attitude? Throughout my collection I have responded to these concerns by visually looking into society’s most heightened versions of instant gratification, the hunt for it and the cause of this need. I am fascinated with looking at western societies traits and habits to form collections. My research tends to start with looking at psychology and philosophy theories then applying them to what is happening today to form a collection. I come from a background of set design so am interested in combining this in my work. My aim is to create clothing and environments that are a heightened commentary to the world we live in.

Sophisticated, edgy and inspired by imacculate craftmanship are the ethos behind the collection and Lilla's work in general. Lilla's aim with this collection was to innovatively modernize denselly embellished and carefully crafted folk dress and create a collection that is rich in textures and embellishments by using various hand - and machine embroidery techniques. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Copyright © 2013 Victoria Rowley Victoria Rowley is a Textile Print Designer and Illustrator currently based in London. She enjoys experimenting with techniques in silkscreen printing, and using her skills in hand illustration into digital print. Victoria’s art requires an open mind as she interjects traditional academic botanicals with exotic imagery. 8=========D In Hyper-Real SS13, Victoria set out to explore themes of fleshy surfaces and sexuality. She uses abstract interpretations to replicate the real sensuality and lustre of correlated textures. Influenced by the photography of Pierre et Gilles, and German Expressionist cinema, Victoria uses harsh contrasts of colour; over-saturated and suffused in her graphic compositions and carnal imagery. She introduces pearlescent lemon and lavender colours in her more exaggerated and uncanny motifs of enlarged and distorted images of glitter and wax. This is set off with rich harmonious earth shades to make the smooth textures advance, and to appear radiate in a hypnotic quality. Having introduced such frivolity through a very stylistic approach to print development, Victoria wanted further exploration to circulate around a discussion on taste. As a reaction against notions of good taste, bad taste is fully explored through archetypical motifs of the grotesque and the beautiful, with writer, Umberto Eco being of key influence. Eco’s dry take on objects of American ‘Hyper-Real’, (almost perfectly fake ornamental replicas of icons in European arts/culture), inspired her to place hand illustrations of ‘crude imagery’ alongside more traditional academic art. Florid pencil drawings of botanics and genitalia with leafy foliage have evolved into monstrous print placements. BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

Born in Israel, Liron Kliger is a London based jewellery designer who graduated a BA (HON) in Jewellery Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion. Liron developed a passion for jewellery design whilst completing a foundation in fashion design course at West London College, Liron developed a love for raw materials and desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used. The primary influence on Liron’s work (apart from the raw materials) evolved from years spent living and travelling in cosmopolitan cities including Barcelona, Paris, Milan and Tel Aviv. Liron was exposed cultural idiosyncrasies which in turn influenced the way in which she combines / uses materials and their subsequent adaptation to her needs. Liron’s latest project developed from a fascination with snakeskin and infatuation with catwalk pieces; motivating her to create her own interpretation via snakeskin inspired bangles. Liron’s previous catwalk projects include a large feathered neck piece and oversized dice jewellery. In the foundation year of her BA Liron was awarded third place in the UK in a competition run by the Metro newspaper for her creation of a jewellery body suit utilising recycled materials. SuperNova adorned with Swarovski crystals

BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

International award Winning Fashion Jewellery Designer Geo Deco Collection For the 'Geo Deco Collection' I was inspired by light. There's a great energy as the sun shines in the day and when lights glow in the dark. I'm fascinated by light, and as it moves how it changes shapes, reflects and refracts. As the sun shines through coloured glass, its a delight as the hues of colours flood in its moving path. The sun mixes with water and oils to create spectrums of colour and It makes us feel happy, alive and awake... I use layers of different coloured light conducting perspex, mixed with mirrors, brass and in some pieces, LEDs. As the Jewellery moves, light catches the layers of material absorbing the lights energy, enhancing the colours as they conduct and glow brightly catching the eye. I work hard with the materials to get a great finish, to give it a polished, shiny, glassy effect and top it with brass to enrich and make it shine golden. The jewellery collection are individual pieces of art... They are structured and made to capture and entertain its audience. I like the pieces to have extra dimensions. The Jewellery is new and innovative, yet people connect as they see and find familiarities and memories within. pikkalili@live.co.uk GALLERIES MOCO LOCO Galleries http://mocoloco.com/fresh2/2012/10/15/gallery-beautiful-objects-exhibition-at-the-aram-gallery.php THE ARAM GALLERY http://www.thearamgallery.org/next/ XHIBIT 2011 http://www.boidus.co.uk/?p=2755 DESIGN CATWALK http://www.designcatwalk.com/lili-colley-enlighted-jewellery/ SEE/SAW/SEEN http://www.seesawseen.co.uk/ DeTnK http://www.detnk.com/node/12050 DESIGN WEEK http://www.designweek.co.uk/whats-on/demystifying-beautiful-objects/3035438.article http://mocoloco.com/galleries/gallery/beautiful-objects-exhibition-at-the-aram-gallery/ PRESS DRAPERSonline http://www.drapersonline.com/blogs/unzipped/lcfs-college-shop-not-a-pencil-sharpener-in-sight/5041799.article Londonist http://londonist.com/2012/10/today-london-college-of-fashion-shop-opens.php GLAMUK http://glam.co.uk/2012/09/its-back-to-college-time/ COMPANY Magazine http://www.company.co.uk/fashion/news/london-college-fashion-pop-up-shop LDN Fashion http://www.ldnfashion.com/london-fashion-news/london-college-of-fashions-pop-up-college-shop/ Timeout Magazine WGSN http://wgsn.tumblr.com/post/30987031794 Elle UK.com http://m.elleuk.com/fashion/shopping-blog/the-lcf-college-shop-returns Viora Magazine http://www.vioromagazine.it/photogallery/ Dew Magazine http://www.dewmagazine.com/issuu/06newworld.html http://elegiac-circus.tumblr.com/post/31019347447/lili-colley http://pinterest.com/thedefiant/magazine-volume-1-5-future-bioculture-aw12-ss13/ - Style Bubble http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2012/07/shoes-n-things.html · Tatler.com Catwalk review with emphasis on VIP and Celebs http://www.tatler.com/bystander/events/2012/june/london-college-of-fashion-graduate-show#/7516/image/1 - Vogue.co.uk http://www.vogue.co.uk/news/2012/06/29/london-college-of-fashion-ba-show - Evening Standard http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/fashion/all-the-trimmings-london-fashion-graduates-prove-they-have-a-bright-future-7898848.html?origin=internalSearch - Fashion156.com http://www.fashion156.com/collections/london-college-of-fashion-ba-graduate-show-2012/ · Style Bubble Susie Lau’s influential fashion blog– Catwalk highlights: http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2012/07/hackney-house-antics.html · Catwalk Queen Catwalk show review: http://www.catwalkqueen.tv/2012/07/london_college_6.html · Dash Magazine online Catwalk show review http://www.fashiondash.net/?p=3226 · Adorn Girl Fashion Blog: http://adorngirl.com/london-college-of-fashion-ba-graduate-exhibition-2012/ Exhibition review http://adorngirl.com/robert-wun-fashion-designer/ spotlight on Robert Wun http://adorngirl.com/london-college-of-fashion-ba-graduate-catwalk-2012/ Catwalk show review http://adorngirl.com/london-college-of-fashion-ba-2012-catwalk-backstage/ Backstage images · Luxsure French luxury magazine: http://www.luxsure.fr/2012/07/01/london-college-of-fashion-graduate-show-2012/ · Fashion Bite (Fashion blog) Catwalk show review: http://fashionbite.co.uk/2012/07/04/london-college-of-fashion-runway-show-class-of-2012/#more-11721 · Better Never Than Late (blog) Image Gallery of Backstage at Catwalk Show: http://bntl.co.uk/2012/07/03/backstage-lcf-press-show/ · Fashion Insight (Trade publication) Catwalk review http://fashioninsightfeatures.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/london-college-of-fashion-ba-season.html · EStyler Magazine Image gallery of all designers: http://estylermagazine.com/interviews · The Upcoming (fashion and news blog) Catwalk show review: http://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2012/07/02/london-college-of-fashion-ba-and-fda-show/ · Now Fashion Catwalk show image gallery: http://nowfashion.com/28-06-2012-london-college-of-fashion-2012-part-1-live-event-event-2256.html

Smiling Sandals - Aristides Vanis Collaboration

FdA Cordwainers Footwear Design

I strive to achieve a theatrical and conceptual aesthetic shaped with an elegance and wearability. I enjoy challenging design problems and experimenting with unusual materials. I also possess a diversity in my design and making skills, as demonstrated by my explorations in both men's and women's design, and enjoy pushing the boundaries of design far beyond convention. Having previously interned with McQ Alexander McQueen and Atalanta Weller, I am currently seeking the opportunity to do collaborative projects with other fashion designers, as well as across film and theatre. If you are interested in working with me or would like to shoot any of my pieces, please feel free to send me a message. -- COLLABORATION WITH ARISTIDES VANIS: Shoes created for Aristides Vanis's MA menswear collection 'TRAKATROUKA: THE PARTY'. -- COLLABORATION WITH SADIE CLAYTON: Shoes designed and made by me Clothes - Sadie Clayton Hats - Niamh Flanagan Photography - Iris Bjork Model - Mulan Itoje Make Up - Gosia Byliniak Hair - Lauren-Joal McCombe -- PREVIOUS FEATURES IN: World of Wonder: http://worldofwonder.net/aristides-vanis-fallwinter-2014-collection/ CHBC Net: http://www.chbcnet.com/sh/content/2014-02/18/content_768907.htm Fashion 156: http://www.fashion156.com/collections/sadie-clayton-london-fashion-week-aw14/ Georgina Goodman's blog - 'Love Shoes and Other Stories': http://www.georginagoodman.com/blog/2013/05/28/sadie-claytons-graduate-collection/ AnOther Magazine: http://www.anothermag.com/loves/view/23883/Sadie_Clayton_-_Kingston_University_2013 The Mark Magazine: http://www.themarkmag.com/?lang=en The Individual Magazine: https://www.facebook.com/TheIndividualMagazine Shoe Lust: http://shoelust.us/post/37725153881/charlene-ong Trend Hunter: http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/womens-collection Female First: http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/lifestyle-fashion/styletrends/fashion-student-metal-work-collection-296560.html
