AW 2011 - The world looks different from you to me.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

Throughout my final year I have learnt to hone my design eye and see more of the bigger picture. How I interact and describe fashion is in an extremely emotive and feeling manner, which I express predominantly in a visual, tactile and verbal way. I have come to understand that for me it is not about the process of design development but the research and ideas behind the collection, which interest me more. ‘When I am researching, I absorb everything intuitively like a sponge. I “drink it all in” and internalise it in the world I am creating. Subconsciously, I start to make connections, patterns and links between the inspiration information thus creating a visual language. This then filters through in my sub-conscious and what is important to me gets stored up – thus becoming a cohesive concept. This internal world utilises my inner intuition and encapsulates all the feelings, sense and emotional reactions I have experienced. Through sourcing fabrics, researching, personal photography, drawings, exhibitions, looking at photographs, and listening to music, I am ever searching to gather inspiration to formulate my concept.’ For AW 11 I wanted to create garments, which have lots of delicate layers of texture on top of each other, creating something like fur or an entirely new fabric made from fabrics that I have manipulated. I achieved this by hand dying and fraying silks and wool. I like the idea of taking something and giving it a new life or changing how it is percevied. I drew inspiration from Brassai's photographs particularly of 1930's Paris at night. Through his lens he documented the seedier side of Paris; the risque nightlife of the Parisian working classes. He portrayed his subjects of the underworld - writers, artists, pimps and prostitutes without pity or disapproval instead captured how life was lived. There is a sense of timeless nostalgia and captured life in these photos and later I also found it in the work of photographers like Johnathan Leder, Drew Jarrett and Guy Bourdin. Looking at 1920's perfume bottles and the new look for classic silhouettes as well as Matador's traditional costume for the rich embroidery and textiles. The garments became the result of drinking in all this inspiration and letting it filter through my subconscious into timeless key pieces that I hope will be treasured in the wearer's wardrobes. Currently, I am working on a jewellery line called Helen Elizabeth Accessories, which was born out of interest in developing pieces for my final year collection. The idea behind the accessories line is to create tactile luxury Womenswear pieces to be treasured but at an affordable price. The jewellery features components, which are usually associated with leather hardware and then combined with natural rope for a textured finish. This results in items that are truly unique and special with the ability to dress up any outfit. If you have any questions or want any more information, please email me (see below). www.helenelizabethaccessories.com helen.elizabeth.spencer@gmail.com *** Garments from this collection are for sale. If you have an enquiry about any of the pieces, please send an email to the below address. ***

Pocket comb detail

BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

Inspired by the minimal and quirky elements of Dutch Product design, the ‘functional exhibitionism’ of the ‘Pro- aesthetics’ of Francesca Lanzavechhia and a personal penchant for ‘wearability’ and detail, ‘Fashioned Objects of Function’ is a range of ‘Fashionable Technology’, currently available for Men. Using, re-interpreting, re- inventing and innovating the comb, the hook and the paperclip, 'Fashioned Objects of Function' is the blurring boundary between product design, art and fashion. With no alliance to a particular fashion trend and with no intention of following the classic routine of fashion seasons, Shruti’s work is an intuitive and personal response to the concepts of ‘wearability', utility and functionality in fashion.

Final Major Project:Chameleon 2012

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear)

Chameleon 2012 The idea of the collection is based around an amazing lizard, the' chameleon'. Chameleons have the unique ability to change their skin colour to camouflage their surroundings, which in turn protects them from their predators. This collection allows us to explore issues of identity. Particularly how we change ourselves in order to ‘fit in’ by constantly adapting to the majority, even though this might not be true to ourselves. The issues touched upon in this collection are an unspoken rule in the world- adapting and being camouflage with the majority is something we have to do in order to cope and succeed in the world. lingling.lee.keiling@gmail.com 07540447806 WADMAG http://wadmag.com/words/files/keiling-lee-chameleon-collection/ Geist Magazine http://www.thisisgio.com/Table-Service NOT JUST A LABLE http://www.notjustalabel.com/lingling_lee Papercut Magazine https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.408399245887411.93558.164319450295393&type=1

Longevity Series, Bats

MA Fashion Footwear

The main aim of Stephanie Hensley’s collection is to subvert established modes of thinking both in China and on an international scale through a variety of contrasts. The first was to challenge the long-standing stigma of the term “Made in China” and what that represents by producing a collection of high quality luxury footwear in the country most widely known for mass-producing cheap, low quality goods. The use of symbolism in colors and imagery is ever present & almost inherently accepted & internalized in China. This collection aims to subvert these traditional symbols by pairing contrasting meanings, almost voiding the symbols’ essence as a result. The shoes within this collection consist of an embroidered kidskin leather inner shoe, mostly asymmetrical on the foot but symmetrical in pairs. These inner shoes are the encompassed by a “shell”: a translucent, embroidered outer shoe that stands away from the inner shoe, providing a layer of both protection & obscurity for the shoe underneath. A modernization of a traditional Chinese shoemaking process poetically named the “Thousand Layer Sole” provides texture as well as a bit of shock absorption. The shoes are completed by a transparent heel and platform, further strengthening the theme of transparency or translucence. ABOUT STEPHANIE HENSLEY: Stephanie Hensley is a women's shoe designer with over seven years' experience within the footwear industry, both in the US and China. Stephanie employed her knowledge and connections from the footwear industry & her experiences living in China, compiling this with her time at Cordwainers-London College of Fashion to push her design sensibility to a Master's level, resulting in a finely crafted & highly considered collection.

Process Images of the Final Collection

MA Fashion Design Technology, Womenswear

The project I have been doing for over a year is mostly about combining porcelain and fashion together. I found some inner relationship between the broken shard and garment techniques, like patterns, finishings, etc. By partially concealling the shard into fabric draping, the final looks show several interesting contrasts, which are: - the hardness of ceramic and the tenderness of fabric - the delicate of the draping and the roughness of the breaking edge The whole collection starts from some research about posrmodernism, however ends up with a surreal look. Hope you will like it. LIXUAN YANG lixuan.yang@live.com

Womaning Uniform

MA Fashion Design Technology, Womenswear

Ruiyue Liu is a Chinese fashion designer who recently completed his master degree from London College of Fashion in Fashion Design Technology, womenswear. Prior to his master Degree, he also received his bachelor degree of Fashion Design from Tsinghua University in Academy of Arts and Design with excellent graduate award. He also worked with Tim Yip(the winner of the Best Art Direction of the 73rd Oscar) as an assistant designer during his time in the university, acquiring valuable experiences and knowledge of woking in the industry. Furthermore, He was the only one Asian in seven designers invited to participate in the Copenhagen Fashion Week AW2012 and show his collection in the Innovative Fur Fashion Show. The MA project is named Womaning Uniform. This collection is based on the conception of uniforms. It is known that clothes are communicable, to talk about who you are and who you think you are. Personal identities such as castes and clans can be manifested by the clothes that people dressing. On the contrary, since the symbolic dressing code, people might be considered by others preconceivedly. Thus, clothes, especially uniforms, are much more like a box, shaping individuals similar. A cube, as the key design philosophy, is brought into this project. Accordingly, the style of this collection would be maintained at minimalist and hermaphroditic. Extraordinary and handmade shoulder pads are the main design point to explore how uniforms shape individuals and cover divers personalities. Tailoring techniques are offering an essential support to create straight and crisp silhouettes. It is believed that this project might arouse people to reconsider how clothes communicate. francescasmith@live.co.uk www.francescasmith.co.uk Francesca Smith's work explores the capabilities and juxtaposition of combining hard materials with soft textiles within a fashion jewellery context. She explores a variety of materials from woods to fabrics, to metals to plastics. Exploring the possibilities of applying alternative materials to a fashion jewellery context. Francesca Smith's BA graduate collection:"I have always been fascinated by modern social attitudes towards remembering the dead and how people deal with the loss of a loved one. By looking at the extravagant rituals and customs of the Victorian era and the funerary practices of its people, my intent was to produce a collection, which confronts people with the idea of positive remembrance. By exploring the designs of Victorian jewellery and cemetery art, I sort to recreate classic designs using modern technologies. This contrast reflects the concept of current attitudes towards death compared to that of the Victorians. Using 3D design software and the process of rapid prototyping, I created nylon components embodying elements of Victorian mourning design. I chose to combine these elements with human hair and fabric to create a material juxtaposition, which reflects my design style of using hard materials with soft textiles."
