MA Fashion Artefact

SUMBAWANGA TRAIL Shifting Anthropological Form into Contemporary Utilitarian Artefact It is my passion to design and make unique leather objects with a strict code of craftsmanship but also with the sensitivity and respect for our natural environment. The pieces of this collection have been moulded and hand-stitched from vegetable-tanned leather using a fusion of state-of-the-art and time-honoured techniques. The objects’ shapes have been sculpted to mimic the body’s contours when worn, ensuring a snug and comfortable fit while remaining fully functional. When away from the body, each design stands alone as an intriguing artefact of pure craftsmanship and simple beauty. This collection is influenced by primal forms, such as the hand axe, the grindstone and the stele as well as by the findings of the late mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius. Fusing primal elements with science and modern views, Sumbawanga Trail aspires to raise awareness for the diversity of culture and contemporary thinking in our world. Dissertation Cover

MA Design Management for the Fashion Industries

Abstract This dissertation is about micro enterprises or ‘designer-owners’ in the fashion industry in contemporary Berlin and, more specifically, about the difficulties and challenges which these entrepreneurs must overcome in order to prosper. These firms account for 60% of businesses in the fashion industry in Berlin. They grew in number by nearly 30% between 2000 and 2008. They provide employment to nearly 20,000 people in a city which suffers from the highest unemployment rate in the country. These businesses also define the city’s cultural profile and constitute a significant part of the creative industry sector. The aim of the research was to investigate the challenges that these designer owners must overcome in order to prosper. The objectives were: to identify the most pressing problems encountered; to formulate strategies for them to overcome them; and to make recommendations to local government and other stake holders to support them. Research into small businesses in general and where possible in the contemporary European fashion industry was reviewed to identify the key challenges. This research focussed on: finance; management; human resources; manufacturing; and sales, marketing and PR. A small selection of designer–owners in Berlin was interviewed to better understand the very specific problems of these businesses. Finally, a set of strategies for designer-owners to pursue to overcome these problems was devised and a number of recommendations for local government and other stakeholders were formulated.

MA Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

Yan Yu Cheung, Octo set as a metaphor of fashion alchemist in life. She fascinates in the new textile technique continuously season by season which is a scientist endeavour for the philosopher’s stone. She aims to create a trend called "antique innovation". It is a step backward from the historical technology to the new thing. Not just superficial digital technique can fulfill it. She also states that inheriting the history is a responsibility from a designer. In her MA Menswear Collection, all the boys are her alchemical homunculus. Since alchemy is a spiritual topic which is different from the shallow inspiration from photography or art work. The conscious and subconscious approach is the indispensable process from ancient literature in alchemy to relative design development. Interpreting the elusive concept in text to actual thing is conducted by understanding the balanced way in alchemy, no matter the change from metal to gold or the creation of philosopher’s stone. All the process they devised which proceeded by separation and reunification such as liquefaction, which transform solid to liquid in alchemy. Something was devoured and reformed theoretically. "The interpretation of dreams is a great art." If you are curious how to develop the unique pattern cutting or her signature knitwear technique, Please click Octo’s personal website http://octocheung.com/ to know more alchemical experiment in this collection. Past : Present - collection. Photography: Ollie Morris

MA Fashion and the Environment

Past : Present - material manifestations of memory - This MA project investigates relationships between fashion, memory, identity and experience, and is aimed at finding forms of fashion design and consumption that are meaningful, personal and sustainable. The project title is derived from a quote by T.S. Eliot: “Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future, and time future contained in time past” The past is made explicit in the garments, while what we wear is an expression of our present selves and who we wish to be in the future. As we remember experience over ‘stuff’, clothing becomes a material manifestation of our memories. And by allowing the wearer to ‘manifest’ their own experiences into the garments i.e. through human hair embroidery, life is breathed into them: they become personal and meaningful. The collection attempts to answer the question: if the meaning of our clothing is currently formed through our personal memories and experience rather than through its inherent design, how can design in fact facilitate or explicitly visualize this manifestation of memory in fashion? The garments are made from organic silk hand-dyed with tea+iron (grey), organic cotton and salvaged materials. http://studioanglindo.wordpress.com

MA Fashion and the Environment

The study aims to provide a clear an comprehensive outline of the current processes involved in creating artisanal products in Brazil and investigate both the already existing practices in addition to the ones planned for the future. The study has investigated if there is potential for handcrafted processes and products to be improved upon on a more commercial and beneficial scale. In order to explore and produce concise insights into current artisanal practices, artisanal associations and cooperatives were investigated. The groups were analysed and compared with one another in order to explorer parameters of social innovation, to analyse the drive for demand of the associated products and to identify the best practices in the current artisanal sector investigating their parameters around viability and feasibility. Alpaca

MA Fashion and the Environment

My practice encourages the fashion industry to further engage with unique fine fibres from alternative sources such as camel, yak, alpaca, llama, musk ox, bison and rare breed sheep, among others. This will ensure that biodiversity and genetic variation continues to flourish on earth within both wild and domesticated species. The use of various different uniquely performing animal fibres in fashion knitwear is not only crucial in order to avoid homogeneity in fashion garments, but more importantly for general ecosystem health as the loss of biodiversity is counted among one of the 9 most pressing environmental issues facing us today (Planetary boundaries, 2009). A knitwear collection using many of these unique animal fibres, alongside an educational guide to the sustainable benefits and impacts of the continued development of these worldwide fibre niches was created to highlight the importance of biodiversity in fashion fibre consumption. www.liz-spencer.com lizspencer83@hotmail.com -or- lizsureis@gmail.com

Timeless Story Look 6, Details

FdA Fashion Design Technology (Designer Pattern Cutter)

I am a creative individual driven by the desire to excel, and a love to learn. My work reflects my ability to solve problems and address issues creatively. I am inspired by grand scales and details. By three dimentionality. As a dentist, I find that I have a unique approach to many materials and techniques. I want to always keep going forward discovering new ways in which I can incorporate these into my work. Innovation in pattern cutting is what I aspire to. Using new materials to push my limits excites me. Both these things have come to fruition while studying on the FdA Designer Pattern Cutter course. I have worked successfully in a team as well as individually. I feel confident in my ability to contribute in a working environment.
