BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

Loko Yu BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear http://showtime.arts.ac.uk/lokoyu http://my.lcffirstmove.co.uk/graduates/6831 AW/12 : Influenced by non-fashion bodies presented in the form of NANA sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, anti-mainstream style movements and individualist body art, I explored a multiple shade scheme of black that is defined through 3D surface embellishment, giving the illusion of body art growing from the wearer, through the garment, gaining its own life. I've researched sub-cultures and used elements of them in very fine detailing of my pieces, such as functioning piercing into a seam to create a piece. As a designer, I am constantly inspired by people who break free of society’s expectations to fit into a certain mould, body and appearance. I always seek to explore and develop a concept fully without restrictions like trends or pre-set ideas of what the final garments should be or shouldn’t be. This way, the full potential of an idea can be realized; sometimes mistakes made during the development of a garment can lead to unintentional great outcomes. MA Fashion Curation

■ PROFILE With a background in Communication Studies, during the MA in Fashion Curation I have continually questioned how the essence of a garment can be most effectively communicated through the static display of dress. Recognising ‘movement’ as a key element to this communication, my final MA project identified two approaches to ‘revive’ the traditional static display of dress within the museum space: the introduction of performance and new applications of technology. Through this research I have recognised the importance and potential for the museum space as a site for fashion communication. Curatorial and research interests include: New Technology, Fashion Film and Performance. ■ CHOREOGRAPHING DRESS My final project manifested as a guide for curators and museums to enhance communication within the fashion exhibition. Eight interventions were identified from extensive research as having the potential to actualise a 'choreography of dress', ultimately challenging the static presentation of dress within the museum space. ■ FASHION CURATION'13 Through a collaboration with fellow graduates Fiona McKay and Xenia Capacete-Caballero, we have realised our homogenous ideas about the future progression of fashion curation through a multi-media installation, exhibited at the MA13 Exhibition at Victoria House, London in February 2013. The installation included a 3D scan, an immersive fashion film and an integrated online component, which was created around the archive of the collector, Fraser Laing of General Eyewear (formally Arckiv). www.fashioncuration13.com ■ RECENT CURATORIAL PROJECTS → Shwop Shop Installations for Marks & Spencers, Marble Arch London→ Footprints Exhibition at Central Saint Martins→ Manipulating Surface: Portuguese Craftsmanship. An exhibition for the British Council and British Fashion Council's International Fashion Showcase.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear)

Having bold and graphic design aesthetic, this collection aims to visually reflect the idea of taking things out of their originally sensitive and controversial contexts in order to create new ideas. By providing visuals of The Third Reich uniforms, graphic design and German Folk clothing, the collection tries to propose a concept, in which people look at things without automatically trying to connect them to their primarily negative connotations.

BA (Hons) Fashion Contour

A fashion contour student accomplished at creative design and pattern cutting skills who believes in lingerie is all about self-expression which can combine both functional and sexuality and makes the best of woman’s looks, whilst controlling the body. My work is all about communicative power of contour with strong philosophy,is to consider the flow around the body to demonstrate 'innovation' with sculptural paneling and simplified lines. My work is also inspired by oriental mood (both traditional culture and strong color palette) which combined extreme femininity and glamour with power to accentuate the beauty of the female body. The inspiration of my collection comes from an ancient style of Chinese calligraphy called Seal Characters so that my designs always go with abstracted lines mix with the geometric, modern structure silhouette and minimal clan-cut look to express the unique beauty of both Oriental and Western women, to make them liberated, sophisticated and powerful. Mood board

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

This project is a redefinition of the gentleman in the 21st century, to include aspects of masculinity that have been excluded in the conventional definition, such as gay subculture, and the wild, playful desires of the boy child. Inspired by the post-colonial expression of the tweed suite in traditional South African isiXhosa initiation ceremony, I explore the possibilities to overcome the tensions between tradition and contemporary expression that are experienced by young men everywhere. Having direct historical reference to the British Tweed aesthetic, as well as the traditional cultural elements of African aesthetic, I attempt to reflect these tensions, and possibilities for transformation in my collection that plays with colour, texture, proportion, and the artisanal deconstruction and rendition of the tweed tailored suite. All the tweed suiting I designed and wove as part of the project and created them in collaboration with an artisanal tweed mill in London, called London Cloth. The research for this project used a variety of different methods that include, but not limited to, site visits to South Africa, interviews, and reference materials from historical archives and libraries in South Africa and the UK.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Final Major collaborative project- Good night little one Good Night Little One is a comprehensive collaborative A/W13 collection created by two textiles students specialising in knitwear and embroidery. The collection’s theme is derived from childhood imagination studied through psychological, sociological and visual expressions. The research explores the naïve innocence of children’s minds and how children transform their thoughts into art. This research is a literal manifestation of such a theme and imagery. It will juxtapose and contrast children’s drawing and childlike modern art to create a four piece unisex collection that focuses on each of the team member’s signature style and love of colour and textures.

Like a detective, I keep investigating different aspects of life and get inspired by them. For me it is all about pushing the boundaries of traditional menswear by experimenting with technique and texture to create an innovative outcome. My final collection Hyper-Natural is strongly influenced by a journey to California. It explores the contrasting aspects of reality and unreality. Silhouettes and textures in the collection are informed by the craftsmanship of Native American costume and weaving, incorporating innovative textiles ( using special machinery as Tanaka) and hyper-real colour palettes - inspired by Jeff Koons and Umberto Eco - in the form of feathers, metallic yarns and foil leather. A sense of irony plays into my thought process leading to kitsch elements in the collection. Overall, I want my outcome to be something ordinary presented in an unexpected way, not in an attempt to be eccentric but to be surprisingly relevant. MA Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

Yan Yu Cheung, Octo set as a metaphor of fashion alchemist in life. She fascinates in the new textile technique continuously season by season which is a scientist endeavour for the philosopher’s stone. She aims to create a trend called "antique innovation". It is a step backward from the historical technology to the new thing. Not just superficial digital technique can fulfill it. She also states that inheriting the history is a responsibility from a designer. In her MA Menswear Collection, all the boys are her alchemical homunculus. Since alchemy is a spiritual topic which is different from the shallow inspiration from photography or art work. The conscious and subconscious approach is the indispensable process from ancient literature in alchemy to relative design development. Interpreting the elusive concept in text to actual thing is conducted by understanding the balanced way in alchemy, no matter the change from metal to gold or the creation of philosopher’s stone. All the process they devised which proceeded by separation and reunification such as liquefaction, which transform solid to liquid in alchemy. Something was devoured and reformed theoretically. She made change on traditional cable stitch on knitwear, a chemical process by hand adopted on the surface to create a new image. Besides, original form of suit jacket faded on shirt or kimono, so as to create the imperfect chaotic stage of cheap metal gold making. The garment paused the combination from two substance into a compand in order to project an innovative cutting. "The interpretation of dreams is a great art." If you are curious how to develop the unique pattern cutting or her signature knitwear technique, Please click Octo’s personal website for portfolio Website : http://www.octocheung.com/ E-mail : info@octocheung.com
