Circus theme collaboration project

BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Development

Born in Hong Kong before moving to the UK at the age of 13, Tania will be graduating with a BA in fashion at LCF in 2013. She has a focus on womenswear, as well as styling, which she often combines for collaboration projects from time to time. Her graduate collection displays women’s silhouette in a geometric form, altering the usual impression of femininity. It first started by dissecting dimensions of a diamond and uncovering all of its hidden lines. The ethos behind this collection is to express the female figure in a very tactile way through ‘re-shaping’. Using metallic to emphasise the contrast with exaggerated shoulder patterns against the dark; melded a strong character into the models without losing a sense of sexiness. As if it’s made for women who have an obvious statement of herself.

MA Digital Fashion

This project is a collection of 3D printed works that are to be worn on the body and as part of one’s wardrobe. The main themes in this project are spiritual, reflective and functional. Each theme embraces the concept of clothing one’s self with a product correct for fit to their body shape that can then be transformed into the desired silhouette. To aid this concept, a series of joins and components have been designed which are either applied to the product or left as an accessory to be used with the product to change the appearance of one’s image or satisfy a functional need. MA Fashion and the Environment

Karigar - The Artisan By Ankita Dokania A Synopsis “Pressure such as the drive to consume faster and cheaper, the ever-present demand for newness and the constant reformulation of identity, damage us as individuals and collectively as a society. We are depressed, alienated, dissatisfied, and depressed, anorexic and more cynical than ever before.” (Fletcher, 2007:119) Craft is considered a healing and constructive process. The underlying nature of craft is tradition inspired by the artisan’s own life, family histories and ethnicities. India has been bestowed with a rich heritage of crafts and culture that have been handed down from one generation to the other, mastered with practice and experience. Millions of lives in India depend on this hand production. However, in this era of industrialization, craft is perceived as primitive and of inferior quality compared to the mass-produced, machine made, uniform quality goods and thus is losing its significance. Consequently, the lives of communities who are solely dependent on crafts have been deteriorating and artisans are skeptical about their children committing to this profession not only because of low wages but also for the lack of respect for their vocation. Further more these artisans are exploited by designers and are treated as laborers, losing their own creative identity in the process. This is leading to the disappearance of this treasure trove of skills. 'Karigar - The Artisan' is a small step taken to revive craft in its original form and restore the faith of the workers in their own selves. A workshop had been taken with a small group of Kantha artisans from Bengal over the period of a few weeks taking them back into the history of their own craft as well as showing them modern techniques of the process of design, which helped them to get out of their mode of passive replication and be active participants. The special thing is, each garment has been made very carefully with threads of love and emotion expressing vividly the artisans’ feelings and experiences. Bringing these stories to the consumers causes an interaction between the maker and the wearer building a strong connection amidst them. Being hand stitched these one off pieces give the sense of uniqueness to the consumers who own it. Dignity of Indian tradition matched by a pragmatic consciousness can find a place in international sun, by building on its own intrinsic assets and unique ethnicity. This collection is an expression of individuality and an appreciation of more meaningful and lasting fashion to the west and change the current habits of use and throw, breaking the vicious circle of consumption. Having bold and graphic design aesthetic, this collection aims to visually reflect the idea of taking things out of their originally sensitive and controversial contexts in order to create new ideas. By providing visuals of The Third Reich uniforms, graphic design and German Folk clothing, the collection tries to propose a concept, in which people look at things without automatically trying to connect them to their primarily negative connotations. Final Garment (look1) Saga Photoshoot

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

I am a Japanese designer with an international background who loves aesthetics with a hint of fantasy in reality. This Autumn/Winter 2013-14 collection was produced within a collaborative team: two students from Surface Textiles, myself in knitwear and Ping-Yi Lee in embellishment, dedicated to Janet Kim from Menswear. The concept of childhood imagination was studied through areas such as psychology, sociology, and visual expressions to understand the significance of children's creativity from carious perspectives. These themes were then interpreted through knit, embellishment, and shape development to create garments that embodies playful and sophisticated innovation. Like the monsters drawn by children, the mood of the project reflects on their contradictory characterisation as intimidating but beautiful, expressive but hidden, juvenile but mature... Discovering these imaginary creatures that are thought to be watching us from the dark closet of underneath the bed took us on a journey to explore the colours, movement, and textures for the collection. Special thanks to Saga Furs for the wonderful sponsorship. For more please check: www.merixeo.blogspot.com
