BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

A Surface Textiles student specialising in embroidery. Autumn/Winter 2014 ASA The Natural Transitions high-end ready to wear collection explores the forces of nature: the paradox of volcanoes discovering their immense beauty, which at the same time can bring out violent monsters. Observing the extreme power that nature can produce, which can stop the whole of Europe, as Eyjafjallajökull did in 2010; it was an example of the forces of nature and our powerlessness against it. Consequently exploring the effects we have on nature therefore experimenting with sustainable and unsustainable materials such as fur and plastics. The concept is experimented through innovative hands on textile methods such as; crochet, Irish machine, dyeing of fabrics, felting and embellishment. Using colour ways derived from the nature, such as earthy tones of browns juxtaposed with the acid colours from the volcanoes and geothermal pools in Iceland. The unpredictable atmosphere that the volcano concept creates has lead to design influences being derived briefly from the Native Americans but heavily from heavy metal rock and rock icons such as Jennifer Herrema. Contrasting their style with the Scandinavian minimalism. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

This project is a redefinition of the gentleman in the 21st century, to include aspects of masculinity that have been excluded in the conventional definition, such as gay subculture, and the wild, playful desires of the boy child. Inspired by the post-colonial expression of the tweed suite in traditional South African isiXhosa initiation ceremony, I explore the possibilities to overcome the tensions between tradition and contemporary expression that are experienced by young men everywhere. Having direct historical reference to the British Tweed aesthetic, as well as the traditional cultural elements of African aesthetic, I attempt to reflect these tensions, and possibilities for transformation in my collection that plays with colour, texture, proportion, and the artisanal deconstruction and rendition of the tweed tailored suite. All the tweed suiting I designed and wove as part of the project and created them in collaboration with an artisanal tweed mill in London, called London Cloth. The research for this project used a variety of different methods that include, but not limited to, site visits to South Africa, interviews, and reference materials from historical archives and libraries in South Africa and the UK. http://timothywangmenswear.blogspot.co.uk http://timothywangmenswear.tumblr.com

BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

Born in Israel, Liron Kliger is a London based jewellery designer who graduated a BA (HON) in Jewellery Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion. Liron developed a passion for jewellery design whilst completing a foundation in fashion design course at West London College, Liron developed a love for raw materials and desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used. The primary influence on Liron’s work (apart from the raw materials) evolved from years spent living and travelling in cosmopolitan cities including Barcelona, Paris, Milan and Tel Aviv. Liron was exposed cultural idiosyncrasies which in turn influenced the way in which she combines / uses materials and their subsequent adaptation to her needs. Liron’s latest project developed from a fascination with snakeskin and infatuation with catwalk pieces; motivating her to create her own interpretation via snakeskin inspired bangles. Liron’s previous catwalk projects include a large feathered neck piece and oversized dice jewellery. In the foundation year of her BA Liron was awarded third place in the UK in a competition run by the Metro newspaper for her creation of a jewellery body suit utilising recycled materials. Holley Potts BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear http://showtime.arts.ac.uk/HolleyPotts Chemical substances can alter the mind. One’s perception of reality is changed, whether by emotions, visual enhancement, highs and lows. Researching how they were originally used medicinally, but now widely taken for recreational use, I looked at today’s underground music scene. Taking inspiration ranging from the early Opium Dens in China for some of my details, shapes and quilting to Ernest Shackleton for silhouette and tailoring amongst other influences. The vivid hues of the high and the dark greys of the lows gave me a colour distortion which is reflected in my silk digital prints. As a designer, I feel that most art forms should be integrated with practicality and this should also apply to fashion. I have, therefore, designed a Ready-To-Wear collection which can also be mixed and matched for a more sophisticated look. By contrasting the textures of fine silks and simple jerseys, I have created a high end, contemporary look, simplified by a casual sports influence. ± AW/13 Collection Lookbook: DIRECTION - Holley Potts PHOTOGRAPHY - Tamzin Haughton www.tamzinhaughton.com HAIR & MAKEUP - Marie Bruce MODEL - Rachel Christianos STYLIST - Rita Shi ± Lineup : PHOTOGRAPHY - Hanna Hillier www.hanna-hillier.com HAIR & MAKEUP - Amber Pitkin MODEL - Amber Pitkin amberpitkin.wix.com/ambermua ± WEBSITE: www.holleypotts.com ± Interning Experience: Richard Nicoll May 2012 - July 2012 Giles Deacon November 2011 - March 2012 Selfridges: Marketing Department July 2007 - August 2007

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

“The phenomenon of certain objects becoming so firmly associated with an individual that they are understood as literal extensions of that individuals being” (Belk, 1988: 140) The extension of the “generation Y”: A hybrid ready-to-wear autumn/winter collection looking into the interaction between the “generation Y” and their belongings, which reciprocally shape each other in today’s transformed world. An analysis of the “generation Y” is made in order to further understand how they relate to their possessions. This detailed examination lead the research and the exploration of different themes such as Maximalism and Pop Art; a great focus is made on collaging elements from various sources, reinventing the past with a new freedom and disregarding rules by manipulating and transforming in order to create a distinctive and eclectic outcome. The collection celebrates a world rich in texture, materials, colours, and shapes (in terms of print). The perception of fashion becomes a festival for the senses.

Final Garment (look1) Saga Photoshoot

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

I am a Japanese designer with an international background who loves aesthetics with a hint of fantasy in reality. This Autumn/Winter 2013-14 collection was produced within a collaborative team: two students from Surface Textiles, myself in knitwear and Ping-Yi Lee in embellishment, dedicated to Janet Kim from Menswear. The concept of childhood imagination was studied through areas such as psychology, sociology, and visual expressions to understand the significance of children's creativity from carious perspectives. These themes were then interpreted through knit, embellishment, and shape development to create garments that embodies playful and sophisticated innovation. Like the monsters drawn by children, the mood of the project reflects on their contradictory characterisation as intimidating but beautiful, expressive but hidden, juvenile but mature... Discovering these imaginary creatures that are thought to be watching us from the dark closet of underneath the bed took us on a journey to explore the colours, movement, and textures for the collection. Most new age ideas derive from ancient and perennial wisdom teachings – the Vedas, Hinduism, Yoga, the Mahayana traditions, Buddhism, Islam, Ancient Maya and religions of Native People all over the world. The holistic ideas behind the new age movement are alive amongst young people today, colliding into further movements and celebrated by various events globally. People that are part of the contemporary new age movement tend to be interested in traveling. A sleeping bag would be one of the main items carried by them since it’s easily fold-able. Therefrom comes the decision to marry the ideas of re-incarnation, traveling, and sustainability (upcycling and deconstruction of sleeping bags). a.bykova1@fashion.arts.ac.uk

Masquerade collection

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

The masquerade collection attempts to embody hidden thoughts, desires and imagination of subject with vague identities. With the day to day wear engraved in one’s body, the person becomes an active subject. Indeed, the persona performance loosens the boundaries of hidden identity and representation; hence the limited identity becomes a coming into being. It is a significant gesture for the liberation from sex, ethnic, and religions as well as ideological diversity, and more importantly it affirms a human being living in a current multi-cultural society. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear)

Oksana Anilionyte I would like to thank Saga Furs for a wonderful sponsorship. Collection is based on idea of a soft control. The collection is an investigation into inter-relation of minimalism and modern women. I found my inspiration in Michelangelo Antonioni films L’Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), Eclipse (1962) and Il deserto rosso (1964). His films concentrate on how the modern world influence people and their feelings. Personal feelings, doubts, moods are substance of the films. The works and processes of Robert Morris, Tony Cragg and Daniel Arsham sculptures and abstract painting of Dale Frank served as the initial inspiration for the silhouette, colour, texture and details of the collection. The aim was to mix different techniques and inspirations to reach new and unexpected levels. I embraced the complexities and simplicities by different techniques to reinvent a version of femininity. Robert Morris felt sculptures led to create new ways of using seams to express the fluidity of line. The collection is a lot about the lines that are so pure, so clear, that they convey simplicity in their perfection. The purity is combined with texture that comes from tufting embroidery and soft fur to create a new level of feelings that garments create when touched. A dialogue between time and timelessness runs through the progression of the minimalist aesthetic which is felt in fluidity of seam lines. The collection incorporates a range of luxury fabrics (cashmere, wool, silk, fur, leather) to examine the balance between textures, silhouette and a purity of line.
