BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

Olivia Howick is a Surface Textiles for Fashion student specializing in embroidery and embellishment, with a passion for transforming unexpected materials into luxurious fashion embellishment. Her graduate collection: ‘Medicate Me’ is a high-end ready to wear womenswear collection, designed with the intention of retailing during Spring/Summer 2014. This collection demonstrates the collision of contemporary and traditional approaches to medicine, through the exploration of Native American culture and advances in scientific medicine. The collection draws upon a textile tradition, and transforms it to demonstrate a clinical aesthetic which will appeal to the contemporary consumer. Exploration of new materials, in particular the use of PVC, has allowed for highly creative and innovative textile development through embroidery processes, that reflect on traditional craftsmanship, whilst evoking a clinical and medicinal aesthetic. Transforming materials is becoming an increasingly important aspect of Olivia’s work. This collection saw PVC hose pipes cut, dyed and stitched to become PVC beadwork. Combining this with satin stitch work and screen printed fabric, Olivia likes to work with both traditional aspects to textile design as well more unconventional material. Integral to Olivia’s practice is her illustration and drawing. Specializing in highly detailed hand rendered work, her illustration style is graphic, yet rich in textile inspired texture and detail. Olivia was selected as a finalist for the Nina de Yorke fashion illustration prize, and has also been shortlisted to compete to illustrate for the Maria Luisa website. Olivia has been selected for the LCF Press Exhibition 2013 and will be exhibiting a sculptural textile piece which demonstrates the concepts surrounding her Final Collection, as well as showcasing new textile development. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

The Spring/Summer 2014 season sees the launch of textile designer, Natasha Searls-Punter. Born and educated on the boarders of London and Surrey, she takes an experimental slant on Traditional embroidery techniques to produce innovative textile outcomes. Working with the intension to take the ugly and make it beautiful, she approaches large and difficult subjects such as injury and disease as inspiration for her designs. Being inspired by the natural forms, for the natural form allows the fabrics created to interact with the wearer on multiple levels. This resulted in the success of Natasha’s graduate collection which explores the damage to the victims of hunting though the lens of World War 1. Inspired by the work of the pioneering surgeon Dr Gillies, facial injuries and reconstructive surgical procedures provide distressing yet fascinating imagery which translates into delicate ink work, resulting in a high end ready to wear womenswear collection. Fusing refined beading techniques with raw and torn embellishments, this collection has elegant feel whilst demonstrating the gravitas of the subject. Combining traditional techniques such as Cornley Moss stitching and Tambour bead work with unusual materials such as latex gives the collection a fresh feel. The fascination with destruction of natural forms continues with Tudors vs. 70’s Glam rock: 'Pox me up' which sees the exploration of skin disease as a desirable attribute, inspired by the Tudors and 70’s Glam Rock. Looking to the 70’s as inspiration for the colour palette, like that of a glammed up bruise. The Tudors provides the majority of the visual inspiration, studying small pox, skin ulcers and wounds in particular. Natasha expresses this through surface manipulation in combination with metalwork and traditional embroidery stitching. Again looking to a delicate subject matter, ‘Mortal Fascination’ explores aspects of early 20th century western culture that centers on death, namely trophy hunting and Victorian mourning traditions. Illustration features very heavily in this collection where Natasha has been able to develop her ‘grown out’ technique with the animal heads which dominate the embroidery. By translating these illustrations from flat drawings to stitch and fabric manipulation, she creates unusual juxtapositions of texture and shade. Using white as the canvas to demonstrate these textures the contrast between the delicate, damaged nature of the embroidery and the casual, sporty feel of the garments. Working in collaboration with womenswear designer, Roxanne Leger, these two create a well defined, accessible, high end, womenswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2014 to be shown as part of LCF’s Press Show 2013. This collaboration follows the successful execution of the Flora and Fauna project, as seen in the LCF Annual 2013. LOOK 2. FMP

BA (Hons) Fashion: Design & Technology (Top Up)

Thoughtfully constructed tailoring and outerwear with an emphasis on tactile textures and classic, though, playful silhouettes. The graduate collection has its roots in the idea of slowly, over time, furnishing a home. Silhouettes come from furniture and the cloths used echo the textures found in brickwork, wood & upholstery. The collection has a gathered feel rather than traditionally cohesive. For example, there is no fabric repetition and shapes nod to one another subtly rather than appearing as reproductions. The accessories were formed using artist's canvasses, so saturated in paint they could no longer fill their intended purpose, They have the qualities of leather with intense clolour and in some cases traces of the figurative forms painted by the origional artist Gavin Watson. This lead me to explore trompe o'loeil which can be seen in a waistcoat from the collection. As a designer I instinctively create wearable pieces. Outerwear is my forte and I fuse the use of bespoke and production methods leaving a luxurious finish. PUT YOUR COAT ON ITS FREEZING OUTSIDE. You will feel the benefit x

Editorial with Hill & Aubrey

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear

Ema Ranger is a Menswear Designer with a strong focus on utility and sportswear. Designs are a modern take on nineties street wear trends and are designed to be worn by people of “the street”. Garments are designed to be unforgettable, impactful and interesting whilst also being well made, wearable and luxurious. The wearer should be able to take any garment into their wardrobe and work it with all of their favorite looks. Garments are often made from unconventional materials that wouldn’t usually be found within a collection of this kind, this is to try and break the boundaries between “street wear” and high end menswear. “Xcloose” 2012/13 This collection was based on the “street “and the aim was to express the voice of someone who would otherwise be left unheard. The garments were designed for people of the “street”, rather than using them purely for inspiration, and the idea is that they would be able to style key pieces within the collection to express how they feel. Innovative materials and processes have been combined with nineties sportswear inspiration to create an updated version of the original “street” trends. Graffiti and underground music also inspired the design of this trans- seasonal sporty collection for 2012/13. BA (Hons) Cordwainers Accessories: Product Design & Development

A curious and diligent designer who takes inspiration from many sources including life experiences, anatomy, the fantastical and the unknown. The aim of lindseytait design is to use fashion and its influence as a channel to raise awareness of social issues and to make a difference. The brand is dedicated to having a social responsibility as well as producing superior quality crafted pieces that are one of a kind and make a statement. Striving for perfection, attention to detail is key as well as finding new and exciting ways to create, while incorporating traditional artisan techniques to produce beautifully finished products. Looking to modern technology to influence design and to push the boundaries of ‘fashion’, lindseytait design hopes to bring accessory design to new levels of what can be achieved. The graduate collection ‘skin deep’ is influenced by the issue of self-harm: the stigma associated with it and the restriction of the body to prevent harming. It was key that the pieces should be beautiful as well as provocative in order to raise awareness, yet still be products that can be worn with attraction rather than the ‘ugliness’ of self-harm. Using an intricate cherry-blossom pattern laser etched into the lining (which sits close against the skin) is significant as the cherry-blossom flower represents feminine strength and sexuality. This soft and beautiful leather etched lining is juxtaposed against the strong VegTan exterior that provides a shield-like mould around various parts of the body. Each piece is fully functional, despite being conceptual rather than commercial. Born in a small town in Northern Ireland, Lindsey showed a strong passion for art and craft from a young age, which soon flourished into a love for fashion design. While completing her Foundation Diploma, Lindsey’s keen attention to detail and interest in accessories became apparent, leading to her relocation to London to attend London College of Fashion. Lindsey intends to remain in London to continue growing as a designer and to also expand her knowledge of fashion design and construction into apparel – although her main focus still remains on creating innovative and provocative fashion accessories. BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear

JESSICA NG A/W 2013 So Wrong It’s Right. The A/W 2013 collection stems around the concept of twisted innocence and juxtaposes ideas of purity with the corrupted. It combines the familiarity of personal experiences with a touch of the forbidden that aims to evoke a mood of strange endearment. Many of the artists explored within the themes of this collection are individuals who had been previously condemned by society and even criminally prosecuted for their work because they violated the sacred ideology of childhood innocence. (e.g. Sally Mann, Irina Ionesco) However, we now live in a society that is more tolerant than it has ever been, in some respects, and is willing to entertain ideas of eroticism and childhood coexisting. At the very least, there is a curiosity to explore and investigate subjects within a new, modern context where one might reassess subject matter formerly regarded as offensive and find respect for each quality the image offers. Contrasting the serious subject matter of controversial photography with Jessica’s childhood memories of Garbage Pail Kids as well as saturated Egon Schiele paintings were integral in injecting fun and color to the collection. Vibrant colors and clashes of textures throughout were used to communicate a sense of unease, beauty and playfulness all at once. The primary fabric used in the collection is a syrupy sweet, pink Harris Tweed – ultra feminine with its color, but countered with oversized, masculine silhouettes and a rough, heavy texture. The weighty garments are combined with lighter pieces like sandwashed silk shirts and velvet embroidered leggings to contrast textures and add movement to the pieces. The exploration of draping and tailoring with unconventional finishes was also key in creating the collection. Many of the garments feature stitchless darts and disappearing details like pockets and collars using needlepunch techniques with inspiration taken from unfinished paintings where the lines of the body are finished by the eye rather than actual marks. // PRESS Highly Commended Finalist in i-D Magazine/All Walks Diversity Now Competition (Clothing Design Category) http://i-donline.com/2013/04/diversity-now-the-finalist-cut/ http://blogs.arts.ac.uk/fashion/2013/06/05/students-scoop-prizes-at-diversity-now-2013/ LCF BA 2013 ANNUAL SHOWCASE http://issuu.com/london_college_of_fashion/docs/sdt-annual-2013 // WORK EXPERIENCE Band of Outsiders Design Intern (January 2012 – March 2012) Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Production and Design Studio Assistant (November 2010 – April 2011) // CREDITS (1 - 2) BRITISH FASHION COUNCIL SHOOT Photography: Justino Esteves Creative Direction: Rob Phillips Model: Rebeca Marcos @ Models 1 Beauty: Pace Chen Nail Art: Lauren Michelle Pires (3 - 16) JESSICA NG A/W 2013 Photography: Alexandra Leese Model: Charli Howard @ Union Beauty: Chloe Han (*) i-D Magazine/All Walks Diversity NOW! "The local outsider" The story is started from a 75 minute-long awareness-raising documentary about Lao Hmong and my personal feeling after a Paris vacation in 2012. No1 Handbag

BA (Hons) Fashion: Design Technology (Accessory Design)

The Changing Factor new accessories brand is reinventing luxury. Or, rather, going back to its roots. Or ...both. Through their very ambitious first accessories collection – ‘Manifesto on Luxury’ – the new luxury leather goods brand is giving completely different meanings to what luxury is. Using intricate moulding techniques to create handbags out of one single piece of leather , the moulds being created by hand by the designer herself, the final result is nothing like what you would find on the high-street. Or even in the most prestigious luxury boutiques. It is the luxury of the future. Not to mention their fully bespoke service, where creativity has no limits and you can create your own unique product from scratch with the designer. With an invitation-only group of customers, good luck trying to show off one of these items at your next dinner-party. Promoting style rather than fashion, the products do not reflect present trends, rather being items to be bought, worn, treasured and passed to the next generation. Furthermore, the lifetime warranty may not impress the fashion victims but will definitely impress the women who want to know what they are paying for. The collection – limited to 20 pieces per style - is made through intricate moulding out of one piece of vegetable tanned leather and has precious elements like hand stitching, silver plated hardware and suede lining. Not to mention the cutting edge way the products are coloured. All in all, it is just exquisite. As for the bespoke services, there is nothing more you could wish for. You can either order your favourite handbag that you have always had in mind but never found or play the game and unleash your creativity by working on the product with the designer itself. The Changing Factor already has bespoke projects for some of the London’s up-and-coming and requests from socialites. How long is it going to take until we all fall under the spell? Magda Daniloaia +44 (0) 7718787691 Magda, the founder of TheChangingFactor, is highly creative and she is always looking to break new grounds. She find inspiration in many ways, but it usually starts with a mood that she is in. The “Manifesto on Luxury” collection has been designed in the mood of 'the creator', as a protest against what luxury means today – just a label that you can place on almost any product. Not planning much regarding the way she will conduct her research, she has let her creative instinct led her through the journey. Being inspired by a collection of photographs by Christopher Bucklow, she extracted abstract shapes that then she translated into clay sculptures from which she later created moulds and finally, beautiful handbags.
