Glitter with Substance The intention of the collection intends to expose exploitation through the imposition of westernisation by rebelling against it, through designing a revolutionary combatant style. In wanting to learn more about my partner and his family’s background, being from the Democratic Republic of Congo, I read such books as Adam Hochschild’s ‘King Leopold’s Ghosts’ and Chancellor William’s ‘The Destruction of Black Civilisation. With the history, corruption and traditions of the Congo, I was deeply inspired and very passionate to learn more on a personal level and to develop this through a design process. The clothing will make evident the conflict between the Western and African culture by deconstructing and then fusing the elements together in a contrasting way. Looking at the Black Panther’s in particular on how their uniform portrayed their revolutionary message and why is it important to focal point the corruption of westernisation? By juxtaposing the Western culture with the African culture, combining the traditions of the Congo, the zig-zag design, by bonding fabrics together and rastering the zig-zag pattern through on the laser cutting machine onto staple western pieces and silhouettes; the clothing is then heavily embellished with gold paperclips, ring pulls and safety pins, giving it a hand crafted, individual look. The pieces make a statement, with an exaggerated style and excessive colour palette. About me: Being in touch with historical, cultural and modern day issues with the world, my sources of inspiration are enriched with juxtoposing elements creating a strong statement with bold pieces. Exploring different ways to manipulate fabrics, creating something new and interesting out of mundane every day things; with ring pulls and paper clips being highly used in the current collection. Always keen to rebel in an unexpected way... Lilla is a womenswear, textile and jewellery designer. As a textile designer she is is specialized in embroidery, but also skilled in print and knit. Born and raised is Hungary, Lilla's graduate AW13 collection was inspired by Hungarian heritage and culture. "Folk Supernatural" is based around the supernatural means of Hungarian Folkwear. Sophisticated, edgy and inspired by imacculate craftmanship are the ethos behind the collection and Lilla's work in general. Lilla's aim with this collection was to innovatively modernize denselly embellished and carefully crafted folk dress and create a collection that is rich in textures and embellishments by using various hand - and machine embroidery techniques. New Fergal@Oxygen Photographer: James Hazlett-Beard

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology (Menswear)

Designer Hera Wan completed her BA in Fashion Design and Technology Menswear at London College of Fashion in 2012 and is pursuing her MA in menswear degree in London. During her BA study, she worked at the Amsterdam based fashion house of 'Viktor & Rolf' as a menswear design assistant for three months. With a curiosity driven mind and a lifelong passion for fashion, she decided to explore the realms of aesthetics through fashion design. Hera believes that ongoing dedication and inquisitive imagination are the fundamentals of design. Eruption of colours, noise, emotions and when cultures of different kinds clash and connect is what inspires Hera to create and design. Specialized in menswear gives Hera a great opportunity to test the boundary between traditional masculinity and her eccentric perception and aesthetics of masculinity. Capturing the harmony of colour, prints, and fine details, HERA\WAN showcases the elements of distinction and unexpected blitheness throughout its designs. HERA\WAN 2012 Autumn Winter menswear collection 'Muted Adolescence' is inspired by the innocence and subtle suppression of childhood in the early 1900s. The collection featured attentively screen printed spots, muted colour digital printed argyle pattern and unconventional application of straps and ribbons. The collection is tied together and elevated by the colour combinations and childlike proportion. Longevity Series, Embroidery Design #1: Shrimp

MA Fashion Footwear

The main aim of Stephanie Hensley’s collection is to subvert established modes of thinking both in China and on an international scale through a variety of contrasts. The first was to challenge the long-standing stigma of the term “Made in China” and what that represents by producing a collection of high quality luxury footwear in the country most widely known for mass-producing cheap, low quality goods. The use of symbolism in colors and imagery is ever present and almost inherently accepted and internalized in China. This collection aims to subvert these traditional symbols by pairing contrasting meanings, almost voiding the symbols’ essence as a result. The shoes within this collection consist of an embroidered kidskin leather inner shoe, mostly asymmetrical on the foot but symmetrical in pairs. These inner shoes are the encompassed by a “shell”: a translucent, embroidered outer shoe that stands away from the inner shoe, providing a layer of both protection and obscurity for the shoe underneath. A modernization of a traditional Chinese shoemaking process poetically named the “Thousand Layer Sole” provides texture as well as a bit of shock absorption. The shoes are completed by a transparent heel and platform, further strengthening the theme of transparency or translucence. ABOUT STEPHANIE HENSLEY: Stephanie Hensley is a women's shoe designer with over seven years' experience within the footwear industry, both in the US and China. Stephanie employed her knowledge and connections from the footwear industry and her experiences living in China, compiling this with her time at Cordwainers-London College of Fashion to push her design sensibility to a Master's level, resulting in a finely crafted and highly considered collection.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear

2013 S/S by Young “Why menswear should look serious?” This question arose while I was working in a company wearing a formal suit everyday. In order to break the stereotype of menswear, I have come to London to study designing menswear from the very beginning step. The typical structure of menswear provides a limited space, similar to the boundary of men’s creativity and innovation which are built invisibly since they become adult. Each sense male possess is still playful and somehow pure like their childhood. The medium such as assembling Lego pieces or showing a strong interest in collecting electronic gadgets are apparently proving that the inner side of male nature is linked to their childhood, not same but extended into developed forms. I want to unveil this ‘childhood innocence’ existed inside male’s desire. Men are forced to look serious, formal, well-mannered, and respectable in the society, but inside their hearts, a boy from the childhood is eternally playing with a smile whether they become 20s or 60s. HOW TO FOLD

FdA Cordwainers Accessory Design

My starting point was if a product has a function but it is hidden, how I can overcome the limitations of such a design. The bag appears to be the same as other bags, but if one section is pulled out, it will be a different shape, or its features can be changed if it is reorganised. So I thought origami is one of solution if I use it. The origami is from the flat paper, it can have a lot of features according to how it is folded so it can be something from nothing. I thought about flexible products with how to be folded and it has various ways to use with folding. For example, it is just plain surface before fold but it has special pattern with folded some part. I think this can be good example to show what my concept is, and how I want to make accessories. The other idea is make pattern with folding guide line. It will be also foldable part and that guide line can be one of design for product. It has three types to guides. These guide lines are for cutting, folding to inside and folding to outside. It can be unique patterns for making. www.sungminhan.com hsm0913@gmail.com

Shireeka Devlin is an Irish womenswear and textiles designer based in London. She has recently graduated in BA (Hons) Degree in Surface Textiles for Fashion at London College of Fashion. She likes to create extremely wild and fun pieces that are wearable yet showstopping. She loves to use as much colour and print in her work as possible. Her silhouettes are inspired by menswear contrasted with really playful, feminine loud colours and insane prints inspired by everything in her daily life even if it’s something simple such as a poster of a monkey. Her work is all about the print and she believes in lots hand rendering and primary research mixed with CAD to make her artwork and patterns more personal and interesting. Her latest collection ‘Trippin' Over My Dreams’, explores and translates the view ‘Things are not always what they seem’, in a light – hearted and playful way. The collection is based on optical illusion art. Influenced by a variety of optical illusion techniques and subtle 80’s fashion, the collection is fun yet sophisticated.
