BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

copyright © 2013 devika anita rattu ______________________________FLORAL DECAY Devika Rattu is a Surface Textiles Designer specialising in Print through traditional screen-printing and digital printed textiles. Her work explores printing and dyeing techniques with a modern twist by distorting and warping her artwork to create something distinctly unique. Her Spring/Summer 2014 collection Floral Decay is a high-end womenswear collection, which stemmed from the idea that man-made cites are created by destroying natural landscapes. Then when man no longer has use for the structures, the invasion of nature and the decaying process takes over and creates something delicately beautiful, fragile and unique. Looking at the visual record of physical decay shown in the work of Marchand and Meffre’s ‘Ruins of Detroit’ the photography explores abandonment by people, society and the presence of past lives within the derelict buildings. The collection draws on traditional print processes of Devore and dyeing used in a contemporary way with unconventional fabrics. The techniques have been extensively refined to showcase a highly creative development of textiles. Both techniques required long periods of time to explore, test and perfect, creating a distinctive collection. The dyeing and printing process has been a fundamental aspect to the collection. The importance of colour is paramount to Devika’s vision through her collection, especially the transformation of her artwork into printed textiles. An integral part to the development of Devika’s work is her floral illustrations. Specialising in organic watercolour paintings rich in colour, distorted and warped to form graphic structural shapes, which won her a prize for Chelsea Flower Show competition and an annual membership to the Royal Horticultural Society. Then developed for the illustration competition Nina De Yorke and used to create an instillation for the 2013 LCF Press Exhibition. ______________________________EDUCATION London College of Fashion Ba (Hons) Fashion Design Technology_Surface Textiles 2010-2013 London College of Fashion Foundation Diploma in Art and Design 2009-2010 ______________________________WORK EXPERIENCE Anna Sui -New York- Pattern Making Intern July-September 2012 Giles -London- Sample Room Intern January-May 2012 Freelance Print Designer_ Mirjam Roudén -London- Design Intern April-May 2011 ______________________________ ACHIEVEMENTS Runner up_Chelsea Flower show t-shirt competition Annual membership for The Royal Horticultural Society Collaborative photo shoot, producing 2 dresses and a headpiece for Fauna & Flora

Kinetic traces- Spring hydraulic heels

MA Fashion Footwear

Kinetic Traces How can body motion dictate women’s fashion footwear design and its performance draw our consciousness? The principal functions of footwear are often sacrificed in Fashion. This project brings sports footwear fundamentals to high-end fashion as sports footwear are based on function and wearability, both very important elements for design features that must interact with the body and be usable by the wearer. I have been analysing comfort elements in footwear, and specially I studied and developed impact absorption, shoe weight, traction (the relationship between shoe and surface) and upper durability. I sought to bring these concepts into the design of high-end women’s high heels. The central concept of the project development was impact absorption, which was studied from a mechanical point of view because heels are structures which are affected by many different forces during the process of human motion. Working with an architect helped to study the forces which interact in the structure of the shoe during movement when walking with high heels. A collaboration with a photographer to photograph and then analyse the forces that interacting with the key points of the human movement that made possible to see the continuous movement broken down into individual parts as a diagram. To realise the absorption function, I introduced an element of internal movement into these structures. I collaborated with an engineer partner to develop these mechanisms, a mechanical technician to develop the mock-ups, and finally with an industrial partner to enable production of the final product in an industrial and much more professional way to achieve an appropriate standard for the target market. The mechanism developments were realised considering factors from both machinery and footwear, to develop a balance between them; the factors that have been key to development are: body weight, body motion, friction, and the percentage of mobility to keep the stability and control of the movement. Impact absorption was developed using different mechanical methods that were not previously used in Fashion, adding features such as springs, rubber balls and, pneumatic hydraulics and metal rings. The last is a new system developed for the industrial partner that I worked with, allowing regulation of the absorption effect depending on body weight. The mechanism can be bespoke according to bodyweight. The final outcomes are a representation of introducing mechanical concepts to traditional footwear. The methodologies used in the project are from traditional making (leather workrked, traditional machinery making, metal work, wood shaping) and rapid prototyping (3D milling machine, laser cuting and 3D printing). As a way of inspiring this collection, various tattoo design ideas have been explored while looking at the different cultures. Philippine Island tattoos seem to be part of the biggest focuses relating to knit design itself. Some of the trading products originated from this country were fine fabrics made by women with a variety of materials. Interestingly the same patterns were also found on the Philippine women’s tattooed hands. These tattoos as the fine fabrics details must have been rather delicate and this has been reflected into the collection. The overall idea of this project is to bring to light and to show the tattoo like pattern by transposing the concept into knitted fabric. To create this concept into the shape and silhouette of the garments it is was crucial to keep it fairly simple as the texture will bring most of the slick and elegant look . Tight fitting clothing is to resemble the way the tattoo is being worn on the body (almost like a second skin effect). Looking at some of the Philippine people we can identify a recurring theme of curved lines near the shoulders where it creates a unique effect of clothing seams However taking into account the body tattoo placements there was a lot of playing round with arm holes in the collection garments which relates to tattoo sleeve placements. Among the designs, the knit is see-through to show the skin beneath, ____About Sarah____ Sarah Mazza is a French designer based in Luton. From a young Sarah always wanted to do something creative. Having studied Textiles at A-Level, her passion for the fashion industry and knitwear in particular was born. Noticing a talent in her, her tutor taught her to knit outside of class and from then on she was hooked, taking every possible chance to practice and improve in her spare time. After gaining a place on the prestigious course at LCF, where she explored multiple textile techniques including embroidery and print, she decided to focus purely on her first passion. She love the way in which she can create her own fabric, shape and make it as individual as it can be. She has always liked using unusual materials and prefer to challenge herself by staying away from conventional wool. Sarah’s knit includes feminine and elegant hand crafted knit that is hand dyed and hand stitched together. Sarah was awarded the Knitwear Award on Fashion156.com in Graduate Showcase Week for BA13 Press Show. ___________________Languages________________ Fluent in French and English _______________PRESS_______________ Artical about the struggle international designer faces in London http://www.notjustalabel.com/editorial/international_designers_in_london Featured on Home Page of NOT JUST A LABEL , http://www.notjustalabel.com http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2014/ready-to-wear/london-college-of-fashion-ba/full-length-photos/gallery/1004248 http://blogs.arts.ac.uk/fashion/2013/09/09/a-glittering-gala-for-the-future-of-fashion/ http://blogs.arts.ac.uk/fashion/2013/07/29/class-of-2013-sarah-mazza/ http://www.thestylelane.com/#/lcf13-runway-show/4577776766 http://www.mydaily.co.uk/2013/07/02/london-college-of-fashion-ba-show-2013_n_3532173.html http://www.fashion156.com/daily-blog/f156-graduate-showcase-week-sarah-mazza/ http://www.fashion156.com/daily-blog/f156-graduate-showcase-week-awards/ http://blogs.arts.ac.uk/fashion/2013/07/19/fashion156-com-report-on-graduate-season-2013/ http://www.logos.info/en/news/sarah-mazza/ http://www.ameliasmagazine.com/fashion/london-college-of-fashion-ba-hons-graduate-catwalk-show-2013-review/2013/07/22/ http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Britain-London-College-of-Fashion-BA-Show/84cceb40738741349519182b8e7d0dcf/28/0 http://www.ohdearism.com/2013/04/13/style-sarah-mazza-lcf-ba-collection/ http://janemarlestylist.tumblr.com/post/51740727194/http-www-joomag-com-magazine-frow-magazine-issue http://www.joomag.com/magazine/frow-magazine-issue-1-2013/0389006001368895868 http://www.flickr.com/photos/eliz_pica/8754598523/in/photostream/ http://issuu.com/london_college_of_fashion/docs/sdt-annual-2013 http://ashleighbrowntextiledesign.tumblr.com/search/sarah+mazza http://www.fibre2fashion.com/news/fashion-educational-institute-news/newsdetails.aspx?news_id=148962 http://newfashions956.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/sarah-mazza-ba-hons-fashion-design.html http://laspola.com/news.asp?id_news=4393&lingua=ITA Featured on Home Page of NOT JUST A LABEL , http://www.notjustalabel.com http://www.maglifico.com/sarah_mazza _________________CREDIT___________________ ___BFC 2013 ___ Sarah Mazza, Photographer, James Rees www.jamesrees.co.uk Creative Direction, Rob Phillips Beauty, Pace Chen, Melissa Wong Nail Art, Lauren Michelle Pires Model, Sarah Dick at Models 1 http://www.models1.co.uk/ ___LOOK BOOK Shoot___ sarah mazza photographer, Josh Chow Hair and MakeUp, Naoko Mabuchi Model, Ayesha Tan-Jones ___BEAUTY EDITORIAL___ Photography, Polin Kuprine Styling, Jane Marle Hair and Makeup, Louise Linder

Her individual style inspired an exploration deeper into the idea of personal identity and how clothes are used everyday to express feeling, personality and individuality. Particularly looking at this in terms of age and how age affects style and the ability to express oneself visually. This strong attraction to powerful individuality began an investigation into age and it's effect on style, identity and image. Looking closely at age gave a new insight into fashion and style and how this changes as we grow older, and the effect that society has on the ability to express identity through clothing the older we get. Researching into the effect that cheap mass production and fast fashion is having on our expression of individuality through clothing and the old idea of buying something to treasure instead of disposing of it when fashion moves on. This research unearthed some inspiring characters for whom despite their age everyday is an opportunity to play dress up. To be expressive visually and push boundaries that come with age and stereotype. To have the confidence and audacity to be completely themselves and only themselves, why be anything else? In particular 90 year old Ilona Royce Smithkin, who’s love and passion of expressing herself using colour inspired the idea of relishing colour and creating a powerfully colourful collection. A strong theme explored in this collection was the sense of idiosyncratic individuality, it was important to explore elements in a personal way and because of this the collection includes hand dyeing, with hand mixed dyes, hand spun wool and hand knitting, constantly referring back to an expression of individual style. The hand dyed and knitted garments are intergrated throughout the collection the soft, bubbly, fluffy uneven texture of the hand spun wool is juxtaposed with the slick shiny surface of metallic Lame`. Exploration of dyeing already coloured silk prints and creating these prints in new colourways creating a sense of personality. BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery

Born in Israel, Liron Kliger is a London based jewellery designer who graduated a BA (HON) in Jewellery Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion. Liron developed a passion for jewellery design whilst completing a foundation in fashion design course at West London College, Liron developed a love for raw materials and desire to create unique pieces encompassing the form and essence of the material used. The primary influence on Liron’s work (apart from the raw materials) evolved from years spent living and travelling in cosmopolitan cities including Barcelona, Paris, Milan and Tel Aviv. Liron was exposed cultural idiosyncrasies which in turn influenced the way in which she combines / uses materials and their subsequent adaptation to her needs. Liron’s latest project developed from a fascination with snakeskin and infatuation with catwalk pieces; motivating her to create her own interpretation via snakeskin inspired bangles. Liron’s previous catwalk projects include a large feathered neck piece and oversized dice jewellery. In the foundation year of her BA Liron was awarded third place in the UK in a competition run by the Metro newspaper for her creation of a jewellery body suit utilising recycled materials. Local Roads Exotic Romances

MA Fashion Design Technology Womenswear

This MA collection for Autumn Winter began with the idea of living off the land and the land of others, leading to a deeper exploration in the shadows of overlapping histories and the seemingly romantic lure of the exotic beyond one's own fences. This narration, combined with further investigation into the codes of haute couture, inspired rich textile development and creative pattern cutting focused on subtle shape manipulations and deceptive ease. --- I believe in the power of nuanced and detailed design, concealing layered development, architectural construction, and engineered details that reveal themselves to those who take the time to look, and then might look twice... Focused on directionally-driven womenswear, I completed the MA at London College of Fashion, earning distinctions for work with both "creative freedom & technical complexity", while also assisting the Couture studio at Alexander McQueen. www.waldmann.co contact: studio@waldmann.co www.facebook.com/Waldmann.co Instagram & twitter: @waldmann_studio -- MA Collection: Caroline @ Bookings photographed by Iringo Demeter Hair & makeup by Virginia Bertolani Trapunto Embroidery sponsored by Hand & Lock

Mask

MA Fashion Artefact

The tile cat is a peerless mascot of Yunnan Province(China). They originally stood on the roofs of the houses to prevent people from disaster and illness. This subject is not only present the traditional Chinese folk culture—tile cat, but also endow the cats with eternal vitality. When you touch the clutch bag, the teeth of cat would jut out automatically. Then you can hold the teeth; When it rains, the mouth of cat on the hat would open to keep you from wet; When you touch the tongue of cat, the mouth would open, then you can put personal items into the mouth....... All of these design conveyed the thought of interactive experience and sensory reaction. For the movement of tile cats, the realization of mechanical device contribute to the whole design. The aim of this kind of combination is to connect traditional culture with modern view, to make the cats alive. With the cross-discipline of modern technology and traditional folk culture, the subject revived the tile cats from gradually extinction. Our subject connected fashion with many other fields such as machinery technology, Internet of things, information control, mathematics and so on. I’ve cooperated with many electronic and digital engineers. Our primary aim is to build the affective bridge between the consumers and the products. The consumers would get the whole new interactive experience through the dynamic shape and color of the artifacts.

BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories: Product Design and Innovation

www.jessicahearnshaw.com Jessica Hearnshaw is an Accessories Designer based in London who's focus is around the design and craftsmanship of high quality conceptual leather goods. This collection’s focus is on accessories that have a integral relationship to what they contain. That are as fascinating to unwrap, as a gift is to open. Inspired specifically by traditional japanese packaging which has a strong minimalist aesthetic. A key notion of japanese packaging is that the gift and the act of unwrapping the gift, is just as important as what is inside. This art form would wrap a given object in whatever materials lay at hand. The outcome was often not only practical for storage and transporting the object but also produced a simple beautiful shape free of all excess and extravagance ----------------------------------------------- Credits: Images 1 - 5: Art Director: Benjamin Thapa, Photographer: Giulia Zucchetti, Model: Max @ Profile, Stylist: Irene Manicone, Makeup: Nichola Mai Images 6 - 9: Art Direction & Photographer: Benjamin Thapa Image 10 - 11: Photography: Anthony John Sayer Creative Director: Rob Phillips Beauty: Pace Chen Model: Rosemary Banks
